About the job

To be part of the management team in the nursery, to contribute to the overall care and development of all children that attend the nursery and to take day by day responsibility for one of the rooms. To ensure the health and safety of the children will always be of prime concern. To assist the Manager/Deputy Manager with the development and administration of the nursery, in accordance with the Organisation's and Ofsted's policies and procedures and accepting responsibility for this role in the Manager/Deputy's absence. To ensure that the highest Health and Safety standards, OFSTED regulations and Organisation policies and procedures are maintained within the nursery and that the practices employed with the materials and equipment used, conform to such standards. To accept full day to day responsibility for the efficient running of a specific room, leading on practice and role modelling to a high standard. Ensuring that all of the children's needs are met, and that any concerns are identified and communicated to the Nursery Manager/Deputy immediately. Supervision of Nursery Nurses and Nursery Assistants who work in the room that you are responsible for. You will also be required to closely supervise apprentices and students who work in the room. To compile and maintain development records on children and report to the Nursery Manager at agreed intervals. Ensure that all records are accurate, signed and dated. Demonstrate and lead good practice with regards to special needs and inclusion, working with the nursery and area INCO as appropriate. To open and close the nursery. To accept ownership for the day to day responsibility for the efficient running of a specific room, ensuring that all of the children's needs are met, and that any concerns are identified and communicated to the Nursery Manager/Deputy immediately.

The post holder must ensure that the standards of care and education are appropriate for their room and are in line with OFSTED requirements at all times, i.e. Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

To ensure that the EYFS is supported throughout the day. Ensure that all practitioners are aware and are completing activities that are linked to children's interests/their development/extension and this is documented on the planning sheet throughout the day.

To develop good relationships with parents and encourage parental interest and participation in the life of the nursery. When appropriate, advise parents on any problems that may affect their children's welfare. To maintain and contribute to effective and positive communication between all members of staff and parents. Be a key carer carrying out all related responsibilities in building relationships with a small group of children and their families. Also ensure that the staff you are responsible for carry out their role as Key Carers efficiently.

Work with Early Years and other professional teams to continuously improve the quality of childcare and education and to learn about current developments in childcare practice and policy. Pass this information to your team and discuss ways in which it can be implemented within your room.

The "must haves" for you to be considered for this role:

  • NVQ level 3 in childcare with experience of managing a team.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the EYFs and leading that through the team on a daily basis.
  • Has a good knowledge of cultural capital, British values, and the 3 I's and prevent.
