Business Context:

The ORE Catapult aims to be a leading international institution for developing and delivering innovative technology solutions in the offshore renewable energy sector.

This includes:
  • Developing relevant technical and commercial knowledge
  • Developing and delivering innovative and commercially relevant research projects.
  • Delivering commercial projects and testing activities
  • Provide quality service and "conscience of the industry" relating to qualification of new products

Main Purpose:
  • Work closely with the Materials Scientist to ensure Laboratory output is delivered
  • Develop electrical competency by working with the HV Test Team and ensuring all relevant electrical H&S legislation/ local procedures are followed correctly
  • Fully support the HV Lab Manager in ensuring departmental outputs are achieved by delivering relevant test regimes in accordance with appropriate standards
  • Supports general laboratory functions where appropriate

  • Assist the Materials Scientist in successfully delivering project programs to time, specification and budget
  • Provide test support thus ensuring customer's expectations are met
  • Empowered to adopt continuous improvement regimens to improve the efficiency of the work process and working environment

Key Responsibilities:
  • To carry out laboratory procedures in a precise and safe manner
  • To show integrity when providing scientific test results to clients
  • To strictly adhere to the Apprenticeship criteria
  • Ensure all documentation is correct and relevant for appropriate tasks (i.e., risk assessments, work procedures, COSHH assessments, etc)
  • Accurately record and document processes and results
  • Implement plans/ solutions for continuous improvement of lab facilities
  • Actively support all 5S activities within the workplace ensuring the test environment is clean, tidy, organised and safe

Authority and Decisions:
  • Assist the Materials Scientist by successfully executing materials/electrical testing programs and ensuring resources are used effectively and efficiently

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Computer literate - good working knowledge ofstandard MS Packages, especially Excel/Word and also a familiarity/user of Project and PowerPoint is beneficial
  • Motivated and strong team player capable of working individually, within and across multi-functional project teams
  • A keen interest in science and problem solving
  • An interest in renewable energy and the environment
  • Good time management
  • Ability to plan and deliver project work
  • To understand and obey health and safety protocols
  • A desire to develop skills and grow competencies in chosen field

Personal qualities

  • Be able to liaise and communicate effectively with the HV Test Team thus ensuing relevant information is delivered to key clients
  • Work with other ORE Catapult Technical Specialists to deliver service offering
  • To collaborate with multiple personnel to learn a variety of laboratory skills (both materials and electrical testing)
  • To look for new business opportunities or scientific tests to expand the laboratories

Desired qualifications

  • Good A levels (or equivalent) in Chemistry and maths
  • GCSE (or equivalent) English and maths at a 4/C grade or above are required

Future prospects

Potential for continued employment for the right candidate upon successful completion of the apprenticeship.
