The day-to-day role will be highly varied with the requirement to lend technical and sample-making support to multiple different exciting concepts and projects, giving the apprentice plenty of opportunity to put the formal degree learning into practice.
This role is based at our Group Innovation Ideation hub: UNIT 17, in Redditch Birmingham (all expenses and travel to and from Sheffield Hallam to undertake the formal degree training will be paid for by DS Smith).

You will be expected to balance day-to-day responsibilities within your role, as well as academic work set by the university. You will also be required to travel to Sheffield Hallam University for face-to-face lectures and studio time throughout the curriculum (DSS will cover all expenses and travel).

Responsibilities include:
- Supporting the team in the design, development and testing of next generation packaging services and solutions
- Outputting of large and small batches of CAD (computer-aided-design) produced prototype test samples using the computer-aided-manufacturing equipment
- Testing batches of Samples using laboratory equipment
- Recording and writing up data and observations from testing
- Supporting with testing and trials run on new prototyping equipment or machinery
- Supporting with the testing of new materials, processes and concepts
- Using CAD software, and packaging design programmes
- Responsible for keeping the workshop, clean, safe and tidy
- Responsible for the ordering of materials
- Monitoring conditions in the temperature/humidity controlled lab
- Conducting material analyses to assess strength and other performance factors
- Calibrating and maintaining facility equipment
Requirements and prospects
Desired skills
- No specific packaging experience or work experience required
- Some form of background or enjoyment of Design Technology, Engineering or Physics would be preferable but not a requirement
- Good communication skills
- Computer Literate

- Passionate about Physics, Engineering, Design or Sustainability
- Enjoys being part of a team dynamic
- Enthusiastic and happy to get their hands dirty and do a mix of lab-based and physical work
- Uses their initiative
- Well organised with good time management
- Willing to learn and develop new skills i.e. CAD design
- Detail oriented, sets high standards for themselves
Desired qualifications
GCSE Mathematics and English at grade C or grade 4 or above or equivalent, plus one of the following:
- 112 UCAS points including at least 64 points from two A Levels, or equivalent BTEC National qualifications. We accept AS levels. We accept general studies
- 96 UCAS points from three A Levels, including at least 64 points from two A Levels, or equivalent BTEC National qualifications. We accept general studies
