During the course of the apprenticeship the successful candidate will learn and develop the skills and experience necessary to carry out a range of building surveys and inspections. The role will involve undertaking a wide range of duties including condition surveys, providing professional surveying advice, scoping works for investment programmes and dealing with any disrepair cases.

Main Tasks
  • Undertake surveys and inspections of SLHD managed assets and ensure the findings are accurately recorded within the appropriate systems and databases
  • Support SLHD's 'client' team by providing accurate building information, scope of works and condition reports to inform future strategic planning or capital investment and maintenance programmes
  • Inspect structural issues across the asset portfolio and identify appropriate remedial actions including identifying scope of works and raising any necessary repairs
  • Carry out Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) assessments as and when required ensuring appropriate records are kept and any remedial repairs are ordered
  • Undertake technical inspections and prepare reports as necessary for Right to Buy applications
  • Coordinate responses to disrepair cases made against the company including attending court where required
  • Support and advise trades colleagues and external contractors regarding asset condition, anticipated life-span, repairs required and scope of works as required. This may include attending on-site meetings
  • Carry out inspections relating to customer's own improvements
  • Work in a safe manner at all times, taking account of own and other's health and wellbeing at all times

Qualifications, Learning and Development
  • Attend university and complete course work, tests and exams in order to achieve the degree qualification within expected timescales
  • Take part in ongoing apprentice reviews, complete all required training and develop the skills to work independently by the end of the second year of the apprenticeship
  • Make suggestions to your immediate colleagues and your mentor/line manager on how we can improve our services to do things even better

  • Work flexibly in the interests of the service - this may include undertaking other duties provided that these are appropriate to the duties and responsibilities of the post
  • The Safeguarding of children and adults is paramount to everything St Leger Homes delivers. All staff are expected to undergo training and then to identify and report all safeguarding concerns through the appropriate channels

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Experience of practical activities such as home DIY, housework, gardening, car maintenance or similar
  • An awareness of good Health & Safety practices
  • Ability to follow instruction, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team

Personal qualities

  • An understanding of the role and purpose of a building surveyor
  • Experience of planning and prioritising home / work / college commitments and willingness to attend college regularly and undertake a degree level qualification
  • An awareness or experience of what makes good customer service and care
  • Hold a full drivers licence, or a commitment to secure a full licence within one year of appointment.

Desired qualifications

Minimum qualification requirements for this position are GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics and English language at grade C or grade 4, or above - plus 112 UCAS points from at least two A levels, or equivalent BTEC National qualifications.
