About the apprenticeship

Duties

The Business Unit provides essential support functions for all the Agency's operations including financial management, Audit, performance management, commercial contracts, third party claims, streetworks, business planning, health and safety, customer services, office management, integrated project management systems, communication and quality assurance.

In this field you will experience the full range of the Business Unit's work including:
• Learning about the Agency's Financial processes including processing payments, contributing to reporting on the Agency's performance data.
• An opportunity to develop analytical skills by using Excel and PowerBI.
• Understand a variety of the Agency's essential systems.
• Learn how to recover costs that derive from damage by a third party to Welsh Government property on the Trunk Road Network.
• Understand how to deal with the risks that arise from hazardous trees.
• Wide understanding of the TENSOR system (staff time management system), how to record working hours and staff illness.
• Understand the arrangements and methodology of internal audit.
• Operate human resources arrangements.
• An opportunity to understand processes and experience of Streetworks service.
• An opportunity to understand internal and external procurement processes that include the management of different types of contracts.
• To undertake any other duties that is commensurate with the salary and responsibility to the level of the post.

Additional information

• The job is based at Parc Menai, Bangor.
• The successful apprentice will be required to demonstrate the ability to communicate bilingually from the outset. We are prepared to consider applications from Welsh speakers who may not meet the above requirements immediately, but are willing to commit to reaching them.

Qualifications

Qualified to at least Level 2 meeting the following requirements:
Either
• 4 GCSEs grade D or above
• Corresponding Level 2 vocational qualification (e.g. BTEC First Level 2 Diploma Merit or above)

For your information, any combinatinon of qualifications with an equivalent grade will be acceptable.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
