An Engineering Apprenticeship with RSS Infrastructure is the first step into an exciting career in the Rail industry. As part of our team, the role will help shape national projects, embrace the latest technology, and learn the skills to build a career in the rail industry.  You will work towards achieving a City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma for Rail Engineering Technicians qualification.

Our 18-month apprenticeship programme offers a mix of on and off the job learning whilst also gaining experience is many business areas of RSS Infrastructure.  After an initial period of training including inductions and Personal Track Safety (PTS), you will join a department within RSSI where you will be surrounded by experts, who will help you learn every day.

What will I be doing?

You will work as part of a team under the direction and control of the Controller of Site Safety, Nominated Person or Site Supervisor to ensure the safe completion of Permanent Way, Overhead Line Equipment (OLE), Signalling & Telecommunications, Track Warning System, or Construction and civils work. Dependent upon the department, on a day-to-day basis your duties and responsibilities will include:

Permanent Way

  • Ensuring safe completion of rail engineering duties as directed by the Controller of Site Safety, Track Charge Person, Supervisor, or mentor.
  • Safely operating a range of small tools including rail drills, rail saws, bance, disk cutter, impact wrench etc
  • Ensuring that works undertaken are carried out safely to remove risk of injury.
  • Attending and listening to the Controller of Site Safety briefing and sign the Safe System of Work pack briefing record.

 

 

OVERHEAD LINE ELECTRIFICATION

 

  • Safely completing Overhead Line Electrification and Isolation duties as directed by the Nominated Person or Authorised Person.
  • Recording all site activities undertaken in a logbook (subject to quarterly reviews)
  • Working under instruction and as directed to carry out traction bonding.
  • Working towards and gain the necessary knowledge and experience to becoming an Authorised person, including becoming competent in OLEC 2 and OLEC 3.
  • Assisting with detailed Overhead Line Electrification surveys.
  • Gaining competences in all technical, skills, sentinel, and behavioural duties.

SIGNALLING & TELECOMMUNICATIONS

 

  • Carrying out installation work on signalling equipment in line with the standards and the timescale as specified in the Work Package Plan and Task Briefings as directed by the Team Leader.
  • Assisting with checking/investigating safety standards and/or system failures.
  • Assisting other staff in safety testing and design work.
  • Working with and supporting the development of the signalling team.
  • Reporting problems arising during installation and following completion of work.
  • Assisting other staff in safety testing and design work.
  • Assisting with the resolution of “on site” queries and problems.
  • Working with the Team Leader to ensure all personnel working with your direction possess the relevant information, documentation, competency, and experience to always undertake signalling installation to the appropriate safety standards and procedures.

TRACK WARNING SYSTEMS

  • Ensuring that works undertaken are carried out safely to remove risk of injury.
  • Assist other staff in safety testing or work equipment.
  • Reporting any damaged or faulty equipment.
  • Assisting is positioning equipment and running out of cables.
  • Ensuring all equipment is recovered from site, accounted for a loaded away safely.

What are the hours of work?

You will work a minimum of 30 hours per week (additional hours available), across a 7-day shift pattern including nights and weekends.

What experience would we like you to have?

No previous experience within the rail sector is required as full training and support will be provided through the apprenticeship programme. It is essential that all applicants hold a level 2 qualification in Maths and English to be eligible for this position.
