What to expect on your scheme

This is an exciting opportunity to spend a year out from University gaining industry experience in systems engineering with the engineering teams in Belfast.

The Technology Operations NI team supports the entire spectrum of television, radio and online productions across multiple genres. BBC NI’s aim is to provide something of value for everyone. We aim to inform and stimulate debate, to celebrate cultural life and diversity, to describe and explain stories, issues and events involving local people, and to provide memorable viewing and listening experiences for audiences in Northern Ireland and throughout the rest of the UK. You will become an integral part of how we achieve our aims.

You will work closely with our Principal and Senior Systems Engineers to support a multi-platform broadcasting environment with a diverse range of applications and technologies. You’ll also gain skills working alongside the Front-Line Support teams.

What we look for

You’ll love solving problems and seeing how things work. You’ll like having a go at fixing things, or designing and building things yourself. You’ll be studying for a degree in a related field, for example, Computer Science, Electronic and Software Engineering. You have a strong desire to get industry specific experience in your year out. Throughout the application process we'll be asking for evidence that shows your passion for technology.

We’re looking for a knowledge and interest in IT network technologies, Windows Operating Systems, Linux and Apple Macintosh OSX, data storage systems, data wrangling, active directory management and anti-virus and GDPR.

We’d also love to hear about your experience or interest in the transmission of broadcast video and audio over IP, network timing (PTP), video and audio codecs and workflows and related standards.

The successful candidate must, by the start of the placement, have permission to work in the UK. Please note, this vacancy does not meet the minimum salary requirements for a Tier 2 work visa for international applicants.

You also need to be over 18 at time of starting in September 2021.

  • A salary of £14,400 for the year you’re on the scheme

Application process

  • You will complete an online application which will include a variety of questions around your interest in Broadcast Engineering and what you can bring to the placement.
  • If we like what we see, you will be invited to record answers to short video questions.
  • If you are then invited to the next stage, you will be asked to attend two remote interviews.

Due to the volume of applications it is a long process, and it could be up to three months until you hear from us about the outcome of your application.
