What will I do as part of the scheme?

We are offering four graduates, who have either a degree in law or a non-law degree plus a Graduate Diploma in law, but who have not undertaken the LPC, the opportunity to work as part of the BBC’s extended legal team whilst studying for the SQE. You will qualify as a solicitor whilst working with the world’s leading public service broadcaster. It is your opportunity to be part of the team that provides the essential professional legal services which enable the BBC and BBC Studios to enrich people’s lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain.

Our graduate solicitor apprenticeship will support you through the new pathway to qualification by completion of the Solicitors Qualifying Exams (SQE1 and SQE2). You will study with our partner, the University of Law, in London, and will undertake the bulk of this study by way of block release for the first nine months you are with us. After that, for the remainder of the 30-month programme, you will work full time in the business, subject to time off for any further necessary study or to sit SQE2. This means that you can join us straight from your degree or GDL and start earning a salary, earlier.

A strong academic background is essential and you will be required to have obtained your LLB Law degree or Graduate Diploma in Law before the apprenticeship commences in January 2022.

Applicants also need to be able to demonstrate knowledge of and a commitment to the BBC and an understanding of the many areas of law, both editorial and commercial, that we deal with on an everyday basis. This includes not only commercial law, litigation, intellectual property, data protection, employment, and competition law, but also an appetite to support all the varied, and sometimes unique, legal needs of one of the creative sector’s biggest employers. Over the course of your training you can also expect to gain experience of responding both to critical issues immediately and providing long-term business support, legal research, writing and drafting in transaction and contentious contexts, interviewing and advising, negotiation, oral presentation and communication. We welcome people from all backgrounds and value previous work experience.

We are looking for bright, commercially-aware, aspiring lawyers who want to work in what we think is the world’s most exciting in-house environment. You will be involved in a wide range of quality legal work from day one. You will be closely supervised by lawyers who are experts in their individual fields, but you will also get a chance to work with business colleagues across the BBC, in different teams, and build your legal career as part of a large and supportive in-house team which makes business-critical contributions to the success of the BBC.

Who are you?

We need applicants who will have, by the start date in 2022, a law degree or a non-law degree plus the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). We regret that we are unable to contribute to the funding of any of the academic pre-requisites, but the costs of the SQE will be met by the BBC from its apprenticeship levy, whilst you earn a salary from your first day in post. You will be expected to have a 2:1 degree, although we will consider anyone who has a good reason why they did not reach this level.

What are we offering?

In addition to your paid-for secondment to the University of Law, you will have four seats, over two years, based in BBC Legal and in legal teams in BBC Studios and in Commercial Rights and Business Affairs. You may also have a secondment in private practice as we have an established exchange programme with leading firms. All seats will be based in London. You will also have access to a wide range of legal training opportunities and support from a highly experienced legal team. There may be occasional travel to other BBC locations or further afield as part of your employment.

You will earn a competitive apprenticeship salary, inclusive of London weighting, of £28,000 in your first year, £29,500 from January 2023 and £31,000 from January 2024 until the end of your apprenticeship. You will also be entitled to the full range of the BBC’s excellent staff benefits. When you have passed the SQE and completed the period of qualifying work experience, you will be eligible to become a solicitor registered with the SRA and to apply for jobs as a newly qualified lawyer.

[Our aim is to try to ensure that all those we recruit as graduate apprentices are offered a post on successful completion of their training, although this cannot be guaranteed.]

Application process

We will review all applications after the closing date. We will then invite a proportion of applicants to sit an online critical thinking/behavioural test, and those who are subsequently longlisted will be asked to submit a written exercise. Those who are then shortlisted will be invited to our offices (Covid regulations permitting) for interviews and other assessment tests on [early July 2021]. We will not be able to see you on any alternative date.

Successful applicants will join us for an induction in February 2022 and will then join the University of Law on block release, until Autumn 2022. They will then begin the period of full time work experience at the BBC, which will end of October 2024. Thereafter, provided you meet the character and suitability requirements, you will be able to apply for admission to the role of solicitors and apply for positions as newly qualified lawyers.
