As a Network Support Apprentice, you will learn everything there is to know about providing an effective IT and network support service.

Once trained, you will ensure that networks and users can carry out their jobs and failing equipment or software can be repaired and be brought back up and running as soon as possible.

Specifically, you will learn how to:
  • Install new software and hardware (servers, printers, computer workstations etc)
  • Set up user accounts, permissions, and passwords
  • Oversee security of all systems, especially the internet
  • Install anti-virus protection
  • Fix network faults
  • Provide technical support for people using the network
  • Train staff on new systems
  • Complete day-to-day admin and monitor network use
  • Plan future improvements
  • Suggest IT solutions to business problems

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Previous work history gained from a work placement or a part-time role
  • Have some home experience with setting up networks and trouble-shooting PCs
  • Knowledge of computers and various software would also be beneficial to your application
  • A drivers license would also be proven beneficial

Personal qualities

  • A good telephone manor and (virtual) presence
  • To be comfortable speaking via video call
  • The ability to work within a team and take instruction

Desired qualifications

At a minimum, GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, ideally A-Levels (or equivalent level qualifications) or a Degree in an IT related subject

Future prospects

Once you have completed your apprenticeship, it is envisaged that you will move into a network engineering role which comes with additional training and the potential to travel to client sites unaccompanied.
