Therapy Assistant Practitioner (Apprentice)

Band 4 (Annex 21)

Department: Children's and Young People Therapies, Community Services

Watergate Primary Special School

37.5 hours per week

41 weeks (Term time plus two weeks)

You will be based within the multi-disciplinary team under the direction of qualified Speech & Language therapists and occupational therapists atWatergate Special School working with 5 - 10olds with severe learning disabilities and complex needs. Work will include:
  • Review status of children/young people under specialist guidance, create resources and train school staff to provide specialist therapy approaches such as colourful semantics, Lego Therapy , intensive interaction, supporting sensory strategies healthy hands and clever fingers.
  • To support staff and children to use a wide variety of alternative and augmentative communication including communication books, high tech communication systems including use of eye gaze technology and iPads with communication/assistive technology apps and complete administrative tasks such as programming.
  • To contribute to specialist seating and equipment reviews, orders and to complete minor adjustments and maintenance of specialist seating and equipment.
  • To complete administrative work including clinical note writing, ordering equipment, signposting referrals, clinic bookings, and liaison with school staff.

  • Someone who has competent skills and interest in technology to deliver administration work and support clinical work.
  • Someone who is passionate about working with children and young people with disabilities and special needs.
  • A person who can show compassion and respect when undertaking the daily tasks for the clinical team, the children and families and school staff.
  • A person who can work under the direction of others as well as taking initiative and being able to work independently and manage their time to complete tasks given in a timely and productive manner.
  • Someone who has good spoken and written communication skills and ability to liaise with families, other health professionals and education staff.
  • A person who is keen to learn, can direct their own learning, showing drive, initiative and a commitment to quality.

We are a diverse and well-resourced team and have maintained our service provision throughout the national lockdowns using a combination of virtual and face-to-face work.
