What is the role?

We are looking for a remarkable candidate for our Nuclear Medicine Department to undertake a fully funded degree level apprenticeship programme.

The Nuclear Medicine Department provides a diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine service at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital. The department consists of three gamma cameras one with SPECT/CT facility, an on- site Radiopharmacy and a therapy suite. A new Molecular imaging research centre build is underway due to open later this year.

Working as part of a team, duties will include helping to set up clinic rooms, assisting with Quality Control, clean and disinfect areas, and support in the first instance, building skills up to full technologist duties including imaging, intra-venous and intra-dermal administration of radiopharmaceuticals and in-vitro techniques in three years. Radiopharmacy commitment is required on a rotation starting at 07.30 am.

The department operates between 07.00 am and 20.00 and a WTD compliant shift system is in place between these hours.

The post will be practically and academically demanding so we are looking for candidates who are ready for the challenge and share our values of care, honesty, and accountability. You will need to be able to demonstrate good communication and team working skills along with an enthusiasm for science and care. A high standard of integrity, professionalism, and sensitivity, along with being respectful and courteous to our patients, visitors and colleagues is also essential. The successful candidate will need to be in post to commence degree learning by September 2021

Eligibility and entry requirements

Applicants need to hold a minimum of 3 GCSE grades A*-C including Maths and English (GCSE Grade C/new grade 5 or above) and either 128 UCAS Points (ABB equivalent) or BTEC National Extended Dip (DDM) at Level 3. These must also include at least one recognised science. At this stage we would also welcome those expecting their A Level/BTEC grades this summer.

Due to the nature of this apprenticeship you must be aged 18 or over on its commencement in September 2021 and have been resident in the UK/EU for the last three years. You must not hold a similar healthcare science degree or be in any form of formal government-funded education.

Future Prospects

During your 36 month apprenticeship you will be gaining valuable, transferable skills and experiences. Upon successful completion of the accredited BSc (Hons) apprenticeship and end point assessment, the successful candidate will be eligible for entry on the professional register for clinical technologists (RCT). Roles within Nuclear Medicine are currently in high demand with a national shortage of registered practitioners, including in the local region.
