UHBW Pharmacy department are recruiting for a Band 2 Pharmacy Assistant, ideally with dispensary experience to join our friendly, hardworking Pharmacy & ATO team. The dispensary is a very forward-thinking and dynamic department where we constantly strive to improve our services and encourage our staff to contribute to and be part of any changes. We have also recently implemented full electronic prescribing so our dispensary is now paperless.

Our ATOs are an integral part of our dispensing team. The pharmacy at Bristol Royal Infirmary is a very busy department, there is a fast moving team environment & the work is varied. The duties you will train to perform in the initial stage as part of the general ATO role are vital to the smooth running of the dispensary for our patients. Some of these main general ATO duties include:
  • Stock maintenance duties, the main tasks comprising of ward stock checking and ordering, dispensary order unpacking, goods receipt via the pharmacy computer system and storing via our dispensing robot or on shelves.


  • To be a point of contact at reception for dispensary, assisting the receptionist to answer queries from wards and internal staff

Your excellent communication and organisational skills as well as any experience of a pharmacy or healthcare patient/customer service will be an advantage. You will also need to have achieved GCSE passes in English, Mathematics & a science, as well as 3 other GCSE qualifications (or equivalent) to make you eligible to train for the Pharmacy Service Assistant (PSA) Level 2 Apprenticeship & work towards being a dispensing ATO.

Training for this qualification as part of the later Dispensing ATO part of the role will broaden your skills and help us to ensure you have the necessary knowledge required by the GPhC to dispense for patients and deal with patient queries. This also meets the current service demands of our very busy NHS hospital pharmacy.
