Can you lead a team within a Laboratory?

We are looking for a Quality Manager for the laboratory, with highly specialist knowledge to ensure that the laboratory complies with all relevant legislation as well as training all staff in quality related issues.

The University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust provides services to 1.9 million people living in Southampton and south Hampshire, while also providing specialist services such as neurosciences, cardiac services, and children's intensive care to the wider area.

The Trust is currently involved in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Saliva Testing Programme around testing for Covid 19.

We have a new ongoing placement for a Quality Manager for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Saliva Testing Programme at the Chilworth Lab (Science Park, Southampton, Hampshire, SO16 7QJ).

We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible until 31st December 2021.

If you are not already on the bank you will need to be able to provide a reference covering a 6-month period of employment within the last 3 years .

The working hours 37.5 hours across Monday - Saturday hours to be confirmed, the team works shifts across 6am - 10.30pm.

This is a band 6, paying between £35,000 - £40,000 depending on experience.

The main purpose of the role is to ensure that the laboratory complies with all relevant legislation as well as training all staff in quality related issues. The role will be responsible for reporting to laboratory Management, at the level that decisions are made on laboratory policy, objectives, and resources, on the performance of the quality management system and any need for improvement. The post holder will also be expected to train other professional groups such as junior medical staff and infection control nurses.

The role involves:
  • To ensure that the laboratory complies with relevant standards (IS015189), governance and statutory requirements, in particular UKAS Accreditation.
  • To be responsible for ensuring that relevant quality policies and procedures are implemented within the laboratory. Set expectations regarding levels of customer services and ensure all staff understand these and maintain them.
  • To ensure Internal Quality Control and External Quality Control procedures for monitoring the validity of tests and uncertainty of measurements are carried out as required for procedures and be responsible for the Quality System Documentation.
  • Be fully conversant with UKAS Quality Assurance Protocols and plan and perform internal and external quality audits against UKAS and any other relevant standards.
    • To provide day to day management of a Laboratory team.
  • To adhere to laboratory bench SOPs and policies and procedures. To assist with preparation of SOPs and to work autonomously within the guidelines provided.


They are looking for someone who has:

  • Worked within a supervisory role, ideally within the NHS / Lab environment
  • Ideally have experience working within a laboratory
  • Ideally have experience as a Quality Manager not necessarily within the NHS
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Excellent communicator
