The Apprentice Quantity Surveyor will work in the commercial arm of our development team, alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors and a Commercial Manager. This vacancy is for the Midlands region.

Our Quantity Surveyors manage the costs and budgets of our developments from outset to completion. They are regularly on site, keeping an eye on forecasted and actual costsand have to react quickly to problems and changes. They lead on sourcing and managing our contractor teams.

Once fully qualified, your duties will include the following:
  • Take a 'whole company' perspective to the performance of the regional business by positively influencing and enhancing the profitability and operating effectiveness of the business
  • Assist with managing build costs, cash flows and budget financial information as per Group policies and processes
  • Support the team to ensure that Group policies and processes relating to development/ build-related expenditure are followed and reported fully, adding value to the wider business and delivering the commercial objectives of the region
  • Assist in the production of comprehensive commercial reports/estimates for inclusion in land appraisals
  • Support the management of working partnerships with housing associations, third party providers and sub-contractors to ensure that all contractual terms are met and ensure that all orders are placed, managed and settled as per Group policies and processes
  • Manage tasks and self so that the payment and PFA reporting timetable are front and centre
  • Support communications and operational interfaces with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the regional business plan
  • Be familiar with how to authorise and commit expenditure on the COINS system up to the Group approval limit
  • Support the production of key status reports and updates on all KPIs relating to the commercial function.
  • Ensure that the Company maximises its compliance with Group product, specification and deals
  • At all times comply with responsibilities under the Company's Health and Safety and Environmental and Corporate Responsibility Policies and all other company policies, procedures and instructions
  • Any other duties as reasonably requested
  • Study for an appropriate quantity surveying qualification at HNC level or above, with a minimum of 1 day per week (or 20% of working hours) being the expected commitment

Future prospects

Apprentices will be eligible to progress to Assistant QS after completion of their apprenticeship, and this then comes with a salary increase and a car. Progression to the full QS role will follow, once the employee has shown their maturity and competence.

Things to consider

This vacancy is based in Nottingham, but our developments are as far south as Warwick and Market Harborough. Some travel will be part of the eventual role.

Candidates will spend time on site in all weathers, but a significant part of the role is desk based. The QS role runs to a strict business timetable which will involve pressure to meet deadlines at times.

A successful QS is also a strong communicator who can build good working relationships with people.

Due to nature of the role, you will be required to travel offsite 20% of the time.

This role would be suitable for someone who is currently learning to driveor has a driving licence already in place.
