The Pharmacy Department are looking to recruit two Apprentice Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians.

Pharmacy Technicians are vital members of todays healthcare team and contribute greatly in the supply of medicines and products to patients.

The role is becoming more varied and complex as medicines become increasingly sophisticated. Career opportunities for registered pharmacy technicians once qualified include; Medicines Management, Manufacturing and Aseptics, Quality Control, Education and Training, Information Technology, Procurement, Homecare, Clinical Trials, Medicines Information, Governance and Quality and Operational Management.

The training opportunity is an advanced apprenticeship, which involves 'on the job training' whilst you study to achieve a Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.

On completion of the apprenticeship programme and End Point Assessment (EPA), successful candidates will be able to apply for registration to practice as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Training and support will be provided by work based assessors and the training provider.

Minimum entry requirements are:-

GCSE's: Math's C, English and Science (at C or above) and 3 other subjects at a minimum of grade C.


Pharmacy Services QCF Level 2 or equivalent with 12 months current experience and holds a functional skills level 2 qualification in Maths and English (equivalent to C grade or 4).


Three 'A' levels, one of which is a relevant science subject and Maths C (GCSE or equivalent).


Degree in science or humanities and Maths C (GCSE or equivalent).
  • Where a grade C is required must have 4 or above

Apprenticeship funding rules apply.

The training will be based at the Pharmacy department at Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital, however a flexible working approach will be required as elements of the training will take place at cross sites and at other local hospitals, which will require travelling to independently.

This is a 2 year fixed term full time contract Monday to Friday, successful candidates will be expected to participate in weekend and bank holiday working on a rota basis.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Salary: Year 1 £16,909 (70% of top scale of Band 4)

Year 2 £18,117 (75% of top scale of Band 4)

Annual Leave: 27 days per year plus Bank Holidays

From January 2021, as free movement ends there will be a new UK points based immigration system.
