The role is to work within the Network Operations team at WightFibre, whilst at the same time obtain a BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions degree specialising in Cyber Security. As an apprentice engineer you will have the opportunity to work with the team responsible for the maintenance and operation of the WightFibre core network.

WightFibre is a full-fibre network operator on the Isle of Wight that uses many on-premise and cloud systems, in a mixed Microsoft and Linux environment, which enable its staff to perform their duties and ensure optimal performance of its network.

Core routing and switching is by Juniper equipment with a virtual server environment running network operation systems.

The role is highly technical and will give hands on experience to support the University studies. The working week is Monday to Friday, including one day a week at Solent University in Southampton. There will be occasions where some out of hours working will be required for network maintenance and to provide 365 day per year cover.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Become familiar with all cyber related technologies and processes within the team
  • Become involved in the configuration, administration and maintenance of all cyber specific systems
  • Assist with the configuration, administration and maintenance of other network hardware and systems
  • Provide day to day support for all tickets escalated by Customer Service, providing in-depth fault diagnosis for faults
  • Work as part of the Network Operations team to deliver suitable solutions that achieve Business Objectives in alignment with the company's Systems strategy
  • Work with suppliers and contractors in the delivery and support of security related systems
  • Assist in the development and implementation of any cyber specific and network related projects
  • Become familiar with all facets of the IP and fibre network, to enable effective coverage of duties
  • Seek and learn cyber related policies and regulatory requirements, to contribute towards maintaining WightFibre's compliance
  • Keep abreast of trends and emerging cyber related technologies and products
  • Follow the company Change Control procedures for the installation and maintenance of all systems
  • Contribute to the assessment, implementation and administration of all systems to ensure their Security and Compliance
  • Uphold company's standards in matters of data privacy and other compliance regulations pertinent to the systems that hold and process data
  • Take part in the monitoring of access, security and back-ups for all systems
  • Get involved in user training, support, advice and feedback surrounding security related systems
  • Be available for out of hours support for the on-call engineer
  • Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and WightFibre's Health & Safety policies
  • Undertake any other duties and responsibilities as required at manager's discretion
