Flex4 is the UK developer of a highly successful print eCommerce and web to print solution and we are looking for an apprentice developer to join our team based in Kendal, Cumbria.

This is an opportunity for you to join a close-knit development team that shares ideas and experiences, to ensure our software maintains its leading market position and that our clients receive high quality support.

We are looking for enthusiastic web developers who are keen to learn and add to their existing web development skills. They will learn web development in a workplace environment.

This is an incredible opportunity to learn the fundamental skills necessary to start a career in web development. Training is provided by highly skilled professional web developers who will equip you with the knowledge and experience to fast track your way to becoming a web developer. Everything you learn during the training sessions will be absolutely current and directly applicable to your work. Online training is provided to very quickly teach you the foundational languages of web development. Throughout the apprenticeship placement you will learn more languages and begin to specialise in your chosen area.

In the workplace you will be designated a Mentor - an experienced web developer who will be responsible for your learning at work. Group training will also be provided with other web development apprentices and we use Slack (industry standard messaging app) to keep in touch with all the apprentices, mentors, trainers and past apprentices across the country. Subject to social distancing restrictions, at various points in the year, groups of apprentices will get together for residential field trips, for example a conference, hackathon, group training or team building.

Your duties will include:
  • Build - assist with the build of websites, using the CMS interface to add content to pages, create product catalogues and configure other features such as payment gateways, shipping etc
  • Development - learn to follow briefs to apply small updates to the design of a website and also follow specifications to develop small enhancements for client websites
  • Testing - assist the QA team to test other developers website builds and development work, checking for both usability issues and ensure the functionality is functioning correctly, as per the specification agreed with the client
  • Support - provide telephone and email support for our client base, this would include hosting support, CMS user support as well as support for bespoke web applications
  • Other duties - there will be other tasks that form part of the role that the apprentice is required to do from time to time. This might include things like the creation of application user guides for clients, software upgrades, server migrations etc

We are looking for people that enjoy programming, coding, and building websites and/or applications. You must be passionate about development, self-motivated, determined to learn and develop new skills and driven to succeed.

As an apprentice web developer you will be expected to learn on the job, alongside the apprenticeship program learning. As such, you aren't expected to be able to perform all responsibilities and duties from the start of the role but would gradually take on more responsibilities as your training and knowledge improves during the apprenticeship.

  • Someone who uses a range of learning resources to develop new skills, such as online, books or trial and error
  • You will definitely need to enjoy learning and exploring, as there's always something new to master in this industry and everything changes pretty fast
  • Web development is not just about code, you will need to be able to communicate well with your team and maybe clients too
  • You'll also need to be reliable and have a can do approach to your workload
  • Asking questions is often key to developing new skills quickly but you will also be required to research and learn things by yourself

Personal qualities

  • Someone with an enthusiastic and professional attitude and a commitment to learning new skills
  • You will need to be punctual, reliable, honest and have a strong work ethic
  • You must be able to work as part of a team and contribute to team meetings, but also be able to work on your own to targets and deadlines
  • The person we are looking for should enjoy a variety of challenges, be committed to continually improving their skills set, techniques and knowledge
  • Have strong communication skills and be comfortable working in a small collaborative team and communicating directly with clients
  • You should be looking for a new challenge in a business where you can make a difference

Things to consider

First interviews may be online/phone and successful candidates may be given some online learning resources to work through before attending the second interview.

Our offices are based in Kendal (Cumbria) close to both the beautiful Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks. Kendal is easily accessible from the M6 motorway and has good train links.

Due to our location, you should live within a commuting distance of our offices in Kendal, or be looking to relocate to within commuting distance.
