  • Are you looking to start an exciting and rewarding new career as a social worker in Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health NHS Partnership Trust?
  • Do you have strong person-centred values and a commitment to supporting and empowering people?
  • Do you want to gain 'on-the-job' experience while developing the knowledge, skills and behaviour required to be a competent social worker?

We are searching for aspiring apprentices who would like a career within our mental health service. For the first time we are offering a Social Work degree apprenticeship that will give you the chance to achieve professional registration with Social Work England and will enable you to build a career in one of the UK's most progressive Trusts.

At AWP we actively encourage applicants from all backgrounds; we are particularly keen to encourage applications from people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, those with disabilities and from the LGBTQ+ community. We want people to bring their unique blend of experiences, backgrounds, perspectives and knowledge to AWP, as diversity makes us stronger.

We are offering this apprenticeship opportunity in partnership with The Open University. You will be employed by the Trust, working in one of our community services as a "Recovery Co-ordinator". Upon successful completion of the degree apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to apply for a band 5 social work role. There is no charge to you as the cost of the course is met by the Trust and you will be earning while you learn.

You will spend some time on placement in a different team and will be supported by a Social Work placement supervisor. When you are not on placement, you will have dedicated time in your working week to achieve the required competencies of the role, which will include skill days and tutorials. Work-based learning will continue in your substantive role with the support of your manager.

This is an opportunity to learn the skills of social work, including different approaches and methods when working with individuals, families and carers. You will gain experience in planning, carrying out, reviewing and evaluating social work practice. A key component is learning to evaluate and manage risk as well as understanding the legal frameworks and statutory roles of social workers.

You will come to understand the ethical basis of social work, enabling you to consider the impact of social policy on practice as well as how individual and social characteristics lead to disadvantage and social exclusion.

In addition, you will be learning about the role of a professional, including key skills of communication and working in partnership, evaluating information and identifying your own developmental needs.

It is likely that successful applicants will have significant voluntary or paid experience working with vulnerable people. Minimally candidates will possess GCSE/GCE (or equivalent) passes in both English. They will have basic level of IT competence and, where English is not their first language, have an IELTS score of 7. All appointments will be subject to DBS checks.

Further details of the Open University apprenticeship can be found at The open university webpage.

First interviews will be held w/c 21 June with second interviews - over two days - including the Open University on 15 and 16 July. Appointments will be effective from circa 7 September 2021.
