Trainee Telecoms Engineer - 15 Month Apprenticeship

Salary of circa GBP25,000 once apprenticeship has been completed

The Company

GK Apprenticeships is recruiting on behalf of NETS International Limited, a fibre design, planning and Openreach / PIA installation service contractor to telecommunications, fibre Infrastructure providers, operators, vendors and telecom system integrators.

The company harnesses the power of technology to help their customers do great things, and provide access to the latest digital transformation solutions, through their strategic technology partners, and vendors across industries.

They are now looking for a number of Trainee Telecoms Engineers to join their teams in London or Coventry for 15 month, Level 2 Telecoms Field Operative apprenticeships.

Five apprentices are sought including one in Coventry, one in London, E1, one in Ilford, and two in Norwood/Streatham.

The Role

As a Trainee Telecoms Engineer, you will have the chance to learn everything there is to know about fibre optics and GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks). You will develop an in-depth understanding of the fibre network and the splitters which enable individual homes and businesses to access the fibre network.

Learning about Fibre Optic/GPON fundamentals, you will also train and learn how to splice/joint cables, test OTDR, lay cable, blow fibre, troubleshoot your work, read and understand work drawings and report and record updates.

As part of your apprenticeship, you will have the chance to gain a wide range of qualifications and accreditations, alongside your primary apprentice qualification. These will include CSCS tests, NRSWA courses, First Aid courses, BT PIA Overhead & Underground training, Civils accreditations and other Health and Safety courses.

On a day-to-day basis, your role will involve:

- Visiting outdoor customer sites along with the Lead Engineer and working on streets in any weather situation

- Ensuring you use full PPE kit at all times when on site

- Preparing work sites as per Health and Safety Guidelines

- Assisting the Lead Engineer with updating manual Van Checklist/relevant app being used

- Laying fibre cable and pulling inside the ducts and on telegraph poles

- Installing closures, joints, couplers and other fibre accessories

- Making splicing arrangements on existing facilities

- Installing fibre cables in homes using underground and overhead cables

- Working with Civil Operatives to learn about blockage clearance, use of tools and reinstatement after completion of works

- Learning to use fusion splicing and optical testing equipment

About You

To be considered as a Trainee Telecoms Engineer, you will need:

- GCSEs at grade C of above, ideally, A-Levels in English and Maths

- A basic level of understanding of MS Word and Excel

- A clean UK driving licence held for at least two years

- A CSCS and/or EURS card, or the willingness to gain this prior to starting your role

- The willingness to travel

- A 'can do' attitude towards work

- A team player mentality

- Good communication skills and a strong customer care focus

- Great problem-solving skills, attention to detail and a logical approach

- Plenty of initiative, patience and a non-judgemental attitude

- To be reliable and flexible

Any additional tech qualifications will be beneficial to your application.

This role will require a DBS check and a drug screening.

Please note, due to insurance restrictions, the successful candidates will need to be aged 21 or over to be considered.

It is envisaged that travel to work sites will take no more than 2 hours each way. For any travel that is longer, additional travelling time can be included in the working time or it can be given as time off. Accommodation can also be arranged for overnight stays if the distance cannot be commuted.

Van drivers will pick and drop other team members from a mutually agreed locations on a regular basis.

Other organisations may call this role Telecoms Apprentice, Apprentice Telecommunications Engineer, Apprentice Telecoms Engineer, Trainee Cable Puller, or Apprentice Engineer.

Future Prospects

Once your apprenticeship is complete, you will be promoted into a Junior Engineer role and from there you will have the chance to progress to an Engineer. You'll be provided with continuing on-the-job training on a range of technical disciplines and will take on further responsibility as you progress.

The closing date for this role is the 18th June 2021 with interviews expected to commence on the week beginning the 21st June 2021. The start date for this role is flexible.
