What will the apprentice be doing?

We are offering an exciting opportunity to develop the skills to become a medical physics technologist. This will include studying healthcare science to degree level.

We provide scientific and technical support to all users of x-rays and radioactive materials within hospitals. As an apprentice medical physics technologist you will:

Be involved in the provision of radiation protection services to users of ionising radiation, which will include measurements around x-ray facilities and of dose to patients and staff.
Be involved in the performance testing of a range of imaging equipment used in the hospital.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

This post includes a 3 year apprenticeship, which is supported with a fully funded BSc degree program in Healthcare Science Practitioner (Medical Physics Technology) offered by the University of the West of England (UWE). This is a full time post however there is an equivalent of 1 day per week protected study leave once the course begins in September 2021.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

This position will lead onto a full substantive post at Agenda for Change Band 5 within the department upon successful graduation and completion of the apprenticeship.

A Level or equivalent Chemistry (Grade C/5) Essential
A Level or equivalent Physics (Grade C/4) Essential
A Level or equivalent science subjects (Grade C/5) Essential

Things to consider

The successful candidate should have 96 new UCAS points including physics or chemistry, or an equivalent level of knowledge. A high level of manual dexterity and ability to use test equipment are required. Those with existing STEM degrees are not eligible.
