We are looking for Healthcare Assistants to join our Trust, based at Leighton Hospital.

We have both permanent and Bank healthcare assistant roles available across the organisation (mainly on our general Medical wards).

If you are successful, you will be allocated to a vacancy, so be aware that you could be allocated to any ward/location (although we will try to accommodate any specific requests).

Healthcare Assistant shifts cover 24/7 and will include weekends, nights and Bank Holidays. Shifts are normally 12 hour shifts, and are usually 7am - 7pm, and 7pm to 7am.

We have full time (37.5 hours per week), and part time (24 hours per week) permanent hours available. We will try to accommodate your preference with shifts, but you will need to be flexible in your availability and working hours.

Healthcare Assistants carry out a wide range of care duties directly with the patient, and their relatives/carers.

These duties are carried out after training (which we will provide), under the direction of a professionally qualified practitioner (such as a Nurse) and can include the following tasks:
  • helping patients to wash or shower
    • serving food and, if necessary, helping patients to eat
    • making and changing beds
    • turning patients who are confined to bed to avoid pressure sores
    • talking with patients to help them feel less lonely or anxious
    • helping patients with mobility problems to move around
    • giving out and collecting bedpans, helping patients to the toilet and removal of human waste

It's really important to consider that some aspects of healthcare work can be distressing and unpleasant. You will be expected to help patients with personal care (such as washing or dressing) without being embarrassed or feeling awkward. You will need to be able to communicate sympathetically with patients, and distressed relatives and care for patients who are very sick.

Having said that, healthcare work is also incredibly rewarding. Working in healthcare means you'll be making a positive difference to the lives of others. You may help to bring a new life into the world or save another life from ending. Even just knowing that you have helped to make a patients stay with us a little easier is priceless.

You will be working for the NHS, the UK's largest employer, with the many benefits that it brings :
  • Shift pay enhancements for nights, weekends and bank holidays
  • A minimum of 27 days' annual leave per year, plus eight days for bank holidays.
  • pension scheme
  • NHS discounts across various shops/restaurants/services
  • career opportunities (such as our nurse degree apprenticeships)
  • sickness entitlement to support you when you are unwell and cannot attend work
  • Occupational Maternity, Adoption and Shared Parental Pay

We also have Healthcare Assistant shifts available via our Hospital Bank.
If you work "on the Bank" you will undertake "ad hoc" shifts. Working via the Bank gives you the flexibility to chose available shifts and work when it suits you.

Bank Heathcare Assistants cover vacant shifts throughout the hospital, so you could be working in many different areas and with different teams. Working on the Bank can be very demanding for this reason.

PLEASE NOTE: You must be able to work a minimum of two shifts a week on the Bank (unless you are a student nurse).

If you are interested in either a permanent or a Bank Healthcare Assistant role, please submit your application.
