Duties include:
  • The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs of patients, planning programmes of care, implementation and evaluation of these programmes with direct supervision
  • Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of services users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person-centred care principles
  • To deliver high quality, compassionate care under the direction of a Registered Operating Department Practitioner or Registered Nurse with a focus on promoting patient health, well-being and independence
  • To act as the advocate for patients within the area, to ensure a patient-orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines
  • To ensure that patients receive high-quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines
  • Conduct appropriate diagnostic, monitoring, treatment & therapy procedures safely & effectively
  • Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the individuals
  • Undertake anaesthetic, surgical & post-anaesthesia care interventions including managing airways, manual handling /positioning of patients
  • Assist anaesthesia with the use of medical devices & pharmacological (drugs) means. Safely secure and maintain the patient's airway and stability during anaesthesia
  • Maintain a sterile working area whilst safely and effectively performing aseptic technique (including scrubbing, gloving & gowning)
  • Maintain the patient's airway, identifying and responding to changes in the patient's condition
  • Communicate effectively the handover care of the patient

Desired qualifications

  • 5 GCSEs A-C (8-4) including maths, Science and English or equivalent), or equivalent in functional/key skills

Entry requirements: equivalent of 112 UCAS points e.g.
  • A Level BBC
  • BTEC National Diploma DMM
  • Access to HE qualifications in Nursing or similar with 15 Distinctions and 30 Merits
  • Equivalent level 3 qualifications worth 112 UCAS points

Alternatively: applicants will be considered who have:
  • An appropriate Level 3 qualification e.g. Senior Healthcare Support Worker/Theatre Apprenticeship or NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care
  • Such applicants must also be able to evidence 20 credits at level 4
  • Evidence of study within the last 3 years
  • The care certificate must be completed before the commencement of the HEI taught component of the apprenticeship. Candidates will be expected to be up to date with all their Trust's mandatory training requirements including basic life support and manual handling
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years old upon commencement of the programme.
  • Offers are also subject to a satisfactory joint interview with the GSTT and LSBU, and completion of apprenticeship pre-course documentation

Future prospects

  • Upon successful completion of all academic criteria and clinical competencies you will be eligible to register as an Operating Department Practitioner with the Health and Care Professions Council
  • Band 5 Operating Department Practitioner
