About the apprenticeship


Install and maintain computer hardware, clients, laptops, audio/visual equipment and specialist equipment within phases.
Maintain an up to date inventory of ICT equipment, and ensure cleanliness of equipment.
Assist with the expansion of the school network infrastructure including switches, cabling and wireless network equipment. Routine administration including data backups
Software installation, maintenance and upgrading in line with the school development plan
Administration of Internet, HwB, , including learning platforms.
To support staff and students with the use of ICT including preparation of booklets and online support, and assisting with inset training where appropriate.
To support staff and students with the set-up and preparation of ICT equipment around the school.
Report any detected breach of the school's ICT acceptable use policy to the ICT Network Manager.

Additional information

The Apprentice ICT Technician is an important part of St Christopher's School. The school is increasingly dependent on its ICT systems working properly and efficiently especially as we plan for a new build. A proactive and planned approach is essential to ensure the ICT infrastructure enables the school to work to optimum effect.



Good level of literacy and numeracy
Working in the Education sector
Experience of installing and maintaining PC hardware and software
Experience of Microsoft operating systems and Office packages
Experience of supporting end users
Experience of using and preparing audio/visual equipment
The appetite to make a contribution to the lives of the students, parents and the community that the school will support
Awareness of the latest developments and innovations in ICT, including national curriculum developments / recommendations


5 GCSE's including English and Maths
A'level or equivalent in Information Technology subject area

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
