The primary role of an Apprentice is to provide technical support to project teams by undertaking specialist and technical tasks that support the overall objectives set by the Lead engineer.

The main duties are to:
  • To work effectively and contribute to engineering solutions by the correct use of resources and time. This includes an understanding of project management systems, tools and techniques as they are applied to the design and construction process
  • Support proposal development and help deliver work-packages within projects
  • Execute tasks to quality standards, to time and to budget
  • Record and present information clearly
  • Undertake block/ day release to gain a BEng (Hons) in Rail Engineering
  • Assist with on-site inspections and surveys where appropriate

Desired qualifications

  • 112 UCAS points from A Levels or BTEC which must include a Maths-based subject plus another Science/Technology subject, e.g. Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science or Engineering (actual or predicted)
  • Or completion of a Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship
  • GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C or 4 or equivalent


Future prospects

  • A fully funded Rail Engineering BEng degree course at Sheffield Hallam University backed by on the job vocational training
  • A mentor to support you through your study to becoming a professional Engineer
