The HRA is a Non Departmental Public Body with the remit to protect and promote the interests of patients and the public in health and social care research. We do this by supporting and promoting a robust and efficient regulatory and governance framework in the UK. We provide the Research Ethics Service (RES), Confidentiality Advice function, assessments and assurances on behalf of the NHS, and learning, guidance and advice for the research community. Our ambition is to make the UK a great place to do research, where more money invested in research goes into carrying out relevant, good quality research.

Our purpose is to ensure that research involving NHS patients and members of the public is approved through a proportionate and robust system, that they are provided with the information they need to help them decide whether they wish to take part, and that their opportunity to do so is maximised by simplifying the processes by which high quality research is assessed. We have already delivered significant improvements by centralising and simplifying the approval of research in the NHS in England, and are undertaking a range of significant programmes to deliver further improvements.

About the role

We're looking for passionate, committed individuals to play a key role in the HRA Digital team, developing, delivering and supporting complex solutions within the HRA's portfolio of national information systems for health research as they undertake a challenging programme of study towards a Digital Technology Solutions Specialist level 6 qualification. These systems play a vital role in supporting the regulatory approval of health and social care research within the UK.

As part of this programme you'll study towards a BSc degree in Digital and Technology Solutions and could find yourself learning specialisms such as software engineering, cyber-security, data analysis and IT consulting, whilst also developing practical skills working within the HRA Digital team.

How does the programme work?

This is a 4 year programme. For the first 3 years of the programme, you will have the opportunity to complete multiple rotations into different areas of the HRA Digital Directorate. These are selected by you and the programme lead in line with your interests, skills, knowledge and experience, so together we can identify where your strengths lie and help you decide on the career pathway you would like to embark on. For the final 12 months of the programme, you will consolidate your learning into one specialist area of the organisation.

An example of the types of roles you can consider are: Business Analyst, User Experience Researcher, Test Analyst, Application Developer, Cyber-security Analyst, Application Support Analyst and Project Manager.

Where you will be based

Given that you will undertake your studies at Manchester Metropolitan University and will be required to attend campus for at least one day per week, it is expected that you will be based at our Manchester office. The rest of your learning will take place in the HRA office in central Manchester or working from home. You'll also need to travel on an occasional basis to other HRA office locations in Nottingham, Newcastle, London and Bristol.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a minimum of 104 UCAS points at A-level (grades BCC) or an equivalent (e.g. BTEC DMM).

You also need GCSE Mathematics and English Language (grade A*-C / 9-4) or equivalent - or must complete Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications alongside the apprenticeship.

You don't necessarily need to have a background in computer science, but you will need a genuine passion and enthusiasm for all things technology and commitment to developing your technical skills. Additional skills and attributes we're looking for include:
  • A strong desire to learn
  • A passion for technology and health research
  • Quick and agile thinker
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Demonstrable initiative and self-motivation

How Will You Be Rewarded?

We'll provide the full support you need to be successful in your role. You'll also have the opportunity to make a direct and tangible contribution to the way that clinical and health research is conducted in the UK. Additional specific benefits include:
  • A starting salary of £21,892
  • Participate in the NHS pension plan
  • 27 days annual leave
  • Your tuition fees paid in full

How to apply

If you meet the above criteria and would like to be considered for this programme, then please ensure that you complete all required fields and in the supporting information area answer the following questions:

•Why do you want a career in technology?

•What do you know about the values of the HRA, and how do you believe your own behaviours and values align with these?

•If you had to choose a single example or achievement in your life, that you feel would make you suitable for this role, what would it be and why?
