What will the apprentice be doing?
You will be paired with engineering colleagues to learn on the job whilst designing, running and improving software components. You can expect to benefit from training, coaching and mentoring to help you develop in this role. You will be learning to work to our technical standards writing clean and secure code. You will test correct and document simple programs or scripts, and gain knowledge of different systems and software implementation.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
If successful you will attend a 12-week software developer training course with our apprenticeship training provider, which will be delivered remotely, from September 27th.
The initial training course will provide you with the learning and tools you need to contribute more effectively when you join your Team. When on the job you'll continue your training and will work with colleagues to design and build products that will contribute to people, communities and the natural environment.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
This is a permanent position and on completion of the apprenticeship we will continue to support your ongoing personal and career development. This may be to progress to further higher level qualifications within Defra or the wider Civil Service.

No qualifications, previous skills or experience is required .If you believe you can show the enthusiasm and aptitude to become a software developer, deconstructing problems, recognising patterns and have the ability to solve complex problems, please apply.
