As part of this role you will be required to study towards the Engineering Manufacturing Technician Level 4Apprenticeship Standard at Colchester Institute.

Duties to include:
  • To complete a programme of training to be conducted within the various departments of Grinding, Turning, Engineering & Planning, Quality Assurance, Assembly and Jig & Tool to gain a good appreciation of the company as a whole.
  • Join a dedicated quality team and learn from the quality manager / quality engineer.
  • Measurement and inspection techniques using a variety of metrology equipment.
  • Carry out technical analysis of gauging and equipment (Measurement system analysis)
  • Be involved with researching and purchasing new pieces of equipment.
  • Work through non-conformity reports, customer complaints and failure investigations.
  • Carrying out tasks and duties as directed by the departmental Manager / Supervisor.


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Demonstrable interest in an engineering discipline.
  • Have a key interest in quality control and quality assurance.
  • To be I.T. literate and familiar with Microsoft Office.
  • Aptitude for practical science or engineering skills.


Personal qualities

  • Ability to work efficiently and accurately.
  • Highly motivated.
  • Good level of communication


Desired qualifications

Our Higher Apprenticeship is aimed at candidates with at least one of the following:
  • 3 A-Levels at grade C/4 and above
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in a suitable discipline
  • Level 3 BTEC Engineering
  • Or equivalents

All candidates will be required to complete Colchester Institute's mandatory initial assessment process before being put forward to the company. This will consist of online assessments and interview with the relevant department.

Future prospects

Train to become a fully trained inspector / quality engineer after the initial 12 months training.

We have 4 main areas of our quality team:
  • Turning inspection
  • Grinding inspection
  • Assembly inspection
  • Quality engineer

Training will be proved in all areas, but specialising in one is possible after the initial training period.

All apprentices will be rotated through all the departments through the first year:
  • Quality Assurance
  • Jig & Tool
  • Turning
  • Grinding
  • Assembly
  • Engineering & Planning

But the final placement is in the Quality department.
