The Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship standard includes:
* City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Process Technology
* Level 3 NVQ in Process Industries Operations
* IOSH Working Safely Certificate
* Level 2 Functional Skills in Mathematics and English (if required)
The Company
Luxfer MEL Technologies is a global leader in the development, manufacture and supply of Magnesium and Zirconium based products and services to technology industries worldwide. We have approximately 300 employees across the UK & US.
Zirconium chemicals are produced at the Swinton site from a range of raw materials. Our lightweight magnesium alloys are machined or extruded to custom shapes and specifications to meet our customer requirements, and are used in high performance, safety critical aerospace, defence, healthcare, oil and gas and Formula 1.
The Role - Manufacturing Apprentice
Based in our Manchester facility, you will work for Luxfer MEL Technologies as part of the Manufacturing team which has plants located in both the US and UK.
The main purpose of the role is to work on a variety of different processes in order to manufacture a wide range of specialised chemicals and materials. We will provide full training and support and your duties will involve:
* Using pumps, kilns, centrifuges, rotary vacuum filters, filter presses and pressure vessels
* Monitoring and controlling complex reaction chemistry to ensure reactions occur safely and achieve good yields
* Analysing products performing a variety of chemical tests to ensure product is within specification (e.g. Ion chromatograph, particle size, sulphate)
* Getting involved in the Foundries casting process and ensuring the materials meet specification through a rigorous testing regime including Microstructure, O.E.S and X-Ray
* Following products through the process chain and demonstrating a competency to release/fail material through different testing procedures such as Flux, Etching and Grain structures
* Understanding Alloy extrusion parameters, and how this affects different materials by Tensile, Hardness, Macro and Corrosion testing
* Maintaining equipment and completing processes to ensure that production continues in a fast-paced 24/7 manufacturing environment
Our Requirements - Manufacturing Apprentice
* A keen interest in STEM subjects
* Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades C/4 and above (or equivalent) including maths and a science at a grade C/5 or above (or equivalent)
* Strong mathematical skills and familiarity with algebra to perform relevant analytical calculations
* Strong reasoning ability and excellent practical skills
* Professional approach with good communication and interpersonal skills
* Computer data entry literacy
* Team player
* High level of attention to detail
The Package
As a Manufacturing Apprentice, you will benefit from:
* A starting apprenticeship salary of GBP12,500, to increase over time once you have completed your apprenticeship
