Visit and inspect sites proposed for development and/or at risk from flooding and conduct appropriate surveys and tests.
  • Investigate and analyse flood risk from any source using existing data, hydrological and hydraulic theories, calculations and computational models
  • Assess options and design flood alleviation and sustainable foul & surface water drainage solutions in accordance with industry and company guidance
  • Write technical reports with appropriate conclusions and recommendations using plain English
  • Produce guidance and procedures to support flood risk management projects and deliverables using plain English
  • Produce drawings of proposed flood alleviation and sustainable foul & surface water drainage solutions using CAD software

Desired qualifications

GCSE: Grade C/4+ or equivalent in maths, English and a science subject

In addition, ideally candidates should have:
  • Three A-levels (or equivalent) in Mathematics and a Physical Science at grade C or above
  • Or Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship
  • BTEC QCF Extended Diploma grade MMM, BTEC QCF Diploma grade DD
  • Access to HE Diploma full award (Pass of 60 credits - of which a minimum of 45 credits must be at Merit or Distinction)


Future prospects

It is possible that the apprenticeship will lead to the permanent role of Assistant Civil Engineer.
