The purpose of the job is to be responsible for managing the progress of projects or programmes using appropriate tools to analyse the performance of the project/programme. The Graduate Apprentice Project Manager should report the performance of the plan to members of the team and communicate effectively with stakeholders responsible for delivering the plan to ensure that it is representative of current progress. This role requires significant customer interface and therefore requirement excellent communication skills. Mandatory - The full description gives a much richer and more detailed summary of the role and can therefore be more elaborate than the short description. However, be careful not to repeat elements that are covered in other fields you are about to complete e.g. hours, wage, candidate requirements etc.

As part of the Project Management and Project Controls team your responsibilities are to: • Define the work scope to be delivered within the contract or package of work and the interfaces to the other elements of the programme
  • Maintain effective communications with all stakeholders and executing the project or PEP strategies within their contract or package of work
  • Ensure the List of Deliverables (LOD) relating to the scope of work is delivered
  • Assist in securing the required resources to meet their project requirements, ensuring the maintenance of SQEP for any assigned resource and promptly identifying any personnel shortfalls or issues within their project team
  • Drive the delivery of the contract or package activities to ensure they are delivered safely, on time, to budget, meeting business & technical requirements. Monitor and manage the progress of the programme - track progress against milestones, deadlines, budget and provide key stakeholders with reports on these matters
  • Ensure level 3 schedules are developed and maintained for the contract or package of work. Ensure such schedules are consistent with overall Project schedules (levels 1 and level 2). Escalate any discrepancies to the Project Controls Manager
  • Apply the principles of Continuous Improvement
  • Develop, manage and update (with the project controls team) project and programme plans including full costing, development of WBSs, resource management, cost management of risk and critical path review, using appropriate software and tools
  • Manage the change control as the project/programme scope changes, using the correct processes and updating the necessary configuration documentation
  • Understand the need for project baseline control and different types of baseline change
  • Understand the tools assess project performance and quality against the baseline schedule
  • Understand risk and opportunities and integrate the cost of these strategies effectively into the plan/schedule
  • Understand project control methodologies and processes for programme and project management
  • Apply the principles of Earned Value Management (EVM)
  • Maintain an understanding of all current codes of practice
  • Participate in technical communities to support the development of other Vulcain staff

Desired qualifications

Degree (Bachelors or Masters) (minimum of a 2:1) in an Engineering, construction or management discipline.

Vulcain is committed to the development and training of its staff and during your employment, you may receive work related training and development opportunities to encourage, promote and develop the skills, experience and personal qualities which set Vulcain apart from our competitors. Training opportunities are usually addressed during the annual appraisal process but can be discussed at any time by either yourself or your Business Manager. The company may consider providing full or part financial support for you to undertake specific approved training. This may include full or part funding directly from Vulcain or training grants provided by specific industry bodies including but not limited to the ECITB (Engineering Construction Industry Training Board), the National Skills Academy Nuclear (NSAN) or Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Vulcain may also commit to provide other appropriate support as and when required. To receive any training, you will be required to complete a HR001 Training Needs Application and obtain your Business Manager's approval. Once the application for training has been approved you will be required to sign a Training Agreement which confirms your financial commitment and responsibilities. A Training Agreement should be in place before you undertake any training or incur any costs. If you agree to undertake any training, you commit to:
  • Complete the designated training in the timeframe agreed
  • Use the training to benefit the success of Vulcain and its clients If you fail to complete the training, you may be asked to refund part or all of the costs of the training. If you leave the organisation within 12 months of completion you will be required to refund all or part of the costs of the training

Once you have completed the 2 year programme you would be considered for a number of roles within our project controls and project management team including, risk manager, cost engineer, planner, assistant project manager and contract manager. There could be opportunities to work either in the UK or abroad at any one of Vulcain sites.

Things to consider

The location of the work will be split between Stonehouse offices and also client site at Hinkley Point C in Somerset. Relocation may be necessary and can be supported.
