About the apprenticeship


Duties will include shadowing a fully qualified member of the company to learn how to provide mechanical engineering services. You will have involvement with such things as conveyor structures, material transfer chutes, wear resistant liner plates, conveyor drums/pulleys, machined shafts, man-grids, wheel-wash structures, feed & weigh hoppers, weighbridge structures & deck plating, stairways, ladders & access platforms, load-cell test bracketry, lifting beams and frameworks, dryer drum lifters, elevator buckets, guarding systems (to British Standards and with CE marking where required), plate rollings & laser profiling, and enclosures, canopies & portal framed building structures. Willrequire site work depending on needs of the business. Other duties will be undertaken and allocated as appropriate e.g. maintaining a clean and tidy work area in line with health & safety working practices.

Additional information

Before applying for this position please ensure you are able to travel to and from the place of employment in Aberdare and to the XR Training Centre in Pyle once a week. You will be employed full-time as an Apprentice Mechanical Engineer by this company based in Aberdare. You will be enrolled onto a level 2 foundation apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering, and undertake the following qualifications:
- NVQ Diploma in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
- VRQ Diploma in Engineering Technology
- Essential Skills in Application of Number, Communication and Digital Literacy level 1

Candidates must be reliable and trustworthy.
Candidates must be flexible with hours worked.
Must be able to work with others as a part of a team.
Must be able to follow instructions and ask for guidance when necessary.
Candidates should be enthusiastic and committed to both the job and the training.
Prior experience (as a hobby or formal training) of engineering desirable but not essential.
Candidates must hold a GCSE in Maths at grade C or above, as a minimum. Physics qualifications desirable.
Ability to drive is essential.
Must recognise the importance of attending XR Training once a week in order to achieve qualifications in a timely manner.


GCSEs in Maths and English at grades C or above.
