This apprenticeship role offers an exciting opportunity to apply the practical skills learnt through the ongoing studying. Reporting to the Information Manager you will initially assist the Information Officer - HR and Payroll Systems with development and operations of HR and Payroll systems. As your skills in business analysis develop then you may well move onto working with other systems, either internal or external facing as part of the council's transformation programme.This role is also rated as a level 3 role on the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA)

Your duties and responsibilities in this role will consist of:

Core responsibilities:
  • Analytics - Undertakes analytical activities and delivers analysis outputs, in accordance with customer needs and conforming to agreed standards
  • Knowledge management - Maintains knowledge management systems and content to meet business needs
  • Supports others to enable them to complete knowledge management activities and form knowledge management habits
  • Reports on progress of knowledge management activities
  • Configures and develops knowledge management systems and standards
  • Supports changes to work practices to support capture and use of knowledge
  • Data management - Applies ethical and robust techniques in the transformation of data from one format/medium to another, in line with organisational policies and procedures and being sensitive to risks around the use of information
  • Methods and tools - Provides support on the use of existing method and tools. Configures methods and tools within a known context
  • Creates and updates the documentation of methods and tools
  • Business analysis - Investigates operational needs and problems, and opportunities, contributing to the recommendation of improvements in automated and non-automated components of new or changed processes and organisation
  • Assists in defining acceptance tests for these recommendations
  • Testing - Reviews requirements and specifications, and defines test conditions
  • Designs test cases and test scripts under own direction, mapping back to pre-determined criteria, recording and reporting outcomes
  • Analyses and reports test activities and results
  • Identifies and reports issues and risks associated with own work
  • Information content authoring - Liaises with clients and representatives of the intended audience(s) to clarify detailed requirements
  • Designs, creates, controls and evaluates moderately-complex subject matter ensuring the needs of the audience(s) are met in a manner appropriate to the medium(s) in use
  • Makes informed decisions about the best way to present information to the audience(s), taking into consideration how information may be presented, identified, and searched for
  • Produces information artefacts that are accurate, current, relevant and easily understood by the intended audience(s)
  • Applies moderation and editing processes to content supplied by others
  • User experience evaluation - Evaluates design options and prototypes to obtain user feedback on requirements of developing systems, products or services
  • Tests the usability and accessibility of components and alternative designs
  • Administers a range of evaluations, recording data and feedback
  • Analyses evaluation data and recommend actions
  • Checks systems, products or services for adherence to applicable standards, guidelines, style guides, and legislation
  • Evaluates the usability of existing or competitor systems to provide benchmark values and as input to design
  • Configuration management - Applies tools, techniques and processes to track, log and correct information related to configuration items
  • Verifies and approves changes ensuring protection of assets and components from unauthorised change, diversion and inappropriate use
  • Ensures that users comply with identification standards for object types, environments, processes, lifecycles, documentation, versions, formats, baselines, releases and templates
  • Performs audits to check the accuracy of information and undertakes any necessary corrective action under direction
  • Change management - Develops, documents and implements changes based on requests for change. Applies change control procedures.
  • System software - Uses system management software and tools to collect agreed performance statistics
  • Carries out agreed system software maintenance tasks
  • Quality assurance - Contributes to the collection of evidence and the conduct of formal audits or reviews of activities, processes, data, products or services
  • Examines records for evidence that appropriate testing and other quality control activities have taken place and determines compliance with organisational directives, standards and procedures
  • Identifies non-compliances, non-conformances and abnormal occurrences.
  • Business process testing - Specifies and develops test scenarios to test that new/updated processes deliver improved ways of working for the end user at the same time as delivering efficiencies and planned business benefits
  • Records and analyses test results, and reports any unexpected or unsatisfactory outcomes
  • Uses test plans and outcomes to specify user instructions.

Contributing responsibilities:
  • Information security - Communicates information security risks and issues to business managers and others
  • Performs basic risk assessments for small information systems
  • Contributes to vulnerability assessments
  • Applies and maintains specific security controls as required by organisational policy and local risk assessments
  • Investigates suspected attacks
  • Responds to security breaches in line with security policy and records the incidents and action taken
  • Research - Within given research goals, builds on and refines appropriate outline ideas for research, including evaluation, development, demonstration and implementation
  • Applies standard methods to collect and analyse quantitative and qualitative data
  • Creates research reports to communicate research methodology and findings and conclusions
  • Contributes sections of material of publication quality
  • Uses available resources to update knowledge of any relevant field and curates a personal collection of relevant material
  • Participates in research communities.
  • Application support - Identifies and resolves issues with applications, following agreed procedures
  • Uses application management software and tools to collect agreed performance statistics
  • Carries out agreed applications maintenance tasks.
  • Emerging technology monitoring - Supports monitoring of the external environment and assessment of emerging technologies to evaluate the potential impacts, threats and opportunities to the organisation
  • Contributes to the creation of reports, technology road mapping and the sharing of knowledge and insights.

  • Embrace and promote the values of the organisation and ensure that the highest standards of conduct and behaviour in line with Council's Code of Conduct, including maintaining awareness and taking action wherever necessary to contribute to the safeguarding of vulnerable people

  • The post may require, on occasions, evening and weekend working
  • The post holder will be required to allow a third party to undertake an unspent criminal convictions check

Desired qualifications

5 GCSEs grades A*-C/9-4 or equivalent (including English Language and maths).
