The Gateway South, Coventry development will be constructed on a 450acre site adjacent to Coventry Airport. The project started in 2020 and will be delivered over three years. The project comprises industrial and logistics uses, on a mix of agricultural land, two existing licensed waste tips, an existing HGV yard, and a former sewage treatment works.

In more detail the works include:
  • An adoptable access road of some 35,000 m2
  • 6,000,000 m3 of Earthworks (Excavation, treatment, segregation and re-placement), plus, Demolition, Remediation and Reclamation
  • Screening Bunds
  • Site Spine Road
  • Access Road to a rugby club
  • Emergency Access Road
  • Storm drainage system and associated attenuation and outfalls
  • Foul drainage system
  • Diversion of existing and provision of New Utilities
  • Boundary Treatments and Accommodations works
  • Provision of new ecological habitats and a new 230acre country park

Ultimately the development will provide some 3.7 million ft2 of large B2 / B8 warehousing that is planned for the site and is naturally of major interest for our building operations.

What will you be doing?

You will predominately be site based supporting the function of a Site Engineer to establish line and level control of constructed works and support compliance with specification and achievement of required quality of construction. The role requires the use of own car and will be based around a number of sites.

You will assist the Site Engineer with setting out and other site duties, whilst ensuring that all relevant Company Group & Sector Specific Procedures and Policies are met, in accordance with the Integrated Business Management System.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
  • Set up survey equipment as directed by the Engineer
  • Maintain survey equipment as directed by the Engineer
  • Maintain accurate records and diary
  • Carry out basic setting out duties (upon receipt of training)
  • Initiates permits and generally implements safe systems (upon receipt of familiarisation/training)
  • Communicate and liaise with subcontract staff and operatives in accordance with overall duties
  • Implementing Quality Assurance Records
  • Familiarisation with BGCL Business Manual
  • Developing man management skills
  • Proactively raise technical queries to the Engineer
  • Maintain a safe and tidy site as directed by the Engineer
  • Produce site sketches
  • Assist with the preparation a Contract Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Plan at the start of the contract
  • Promote All Ways Safely culture on the project with staff and supply chain
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of Buckingham Group Ltd in respect of the CDM Regulations
  • Understands and assists the Site Manager and Quantity Surveyor with the control and monitoring of costs on the site
  • Earns the respect of staff and sub-contractors by the way he/she undertakes learning and development as part of the site team
  • Fully commits to the training programme and works as an ambassador for the Future Skills programme whenever possible

Desired qualifications

  • A Level EEE
  • BTEC National Diploma
  • Access to HE qualifications with 45 passes
  • Equivalent level 3 qualifications worth 48 UCAS points
  • Level 3 qualifications must include maths and Physical Science
  • Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A*-C including maths and English (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above) or equivalent qualifications

Future prospects

This apprenticeship programme is very much the start of an exciting career in the industry with wide ranging prospects which may span a number of roles. Buckingham Group will Support candidates to become Chartered Engineers with ICE. Further education to be provided on completion.

Things to consider

Work will be based across a number of sites and will require extensive daily travel. Majority of work will be outdoors working from a temporary site office. The role will be physically demanding and requires lifting and carrying of survey equipment around site. Full personal protective equipment will need to be worn whilst working on site.
