About our Trust

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is a newly formed organisation following a merger between Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WSHFT) and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust (BSUH) on 1st April 2021. WSHFT and BSUH have been working in partnership with a shared leadership team for four years leading up to the recent merger. Our vision (Excellent care, every time - "Where better never stops") is at the heart of all that that we do - we pride ourselves in putting the compassionate care of patients first and foremost. WSHFT became the first non-specialist acute hospital trust to be awarded Outstanding in all of the CQC's key inspection areas and BSUH became the fastest improving acute hospital trust in England and was rated Good overall and Outstanding for caring by the CQC. Moving forward together, the ambition is to continue improving and providing excellent care, every time, for patients.

The merger was a technical but important process for both WSHFT and BSUH which will ensure that the right leadership, structures, and governance are in place. Our journey has started but we have much still to learn as we work towards full merger, enabled by our Patient First ethos which shapes our values and gives structure to our improvement and performance management. Our shared sense of purpose, commitment to investing in and developing our workforce and focus on continuous improvement in the pursuit of excellent care, every time, for our patients underpins all that we do. The largest part of this journey is investing in staff and creating a vibrant and supportive organisation where successful careers flourish.

Have you always wanted to try A&E but been apprehensive about support?

If so, then we have an exciting opportunity for you!

We are seeking to employ Paediatric nurses to join our Emergency Department team at St Richards Hospital. We are part of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust which is a trust that has been rated 'Outstanding' with the CQC, and where our staff survey results show that people love to work here!

St Richards A&E currently sees approximately 65,000 patients per year, with 25% of patients we see being children. We are a designated Trauma unit and have been rated as an "Outstanding Department" by the CQC. We have a robust Practice Development team with a strategic vision which is supported at director level. We are a receiving unit for Stroke calls and have trained our nurses to become specialist assessors for stroke thrombolysis and have demonstrated how the care we provide really impacts on patient outcomes.

Our Paediatric department lies within our main footprint and is staffed by senior paediatric nurses who have developed a rotation programme for staff with a specialist interest in developing their paediatric skills further and offer a potential rotation to the paediatric wards for career development.
The Emergency Department consists of a 4 bay Resuscitation Room ( adult) , a large, recently refurbished unit with 11 Majors1 cubicles and 7 Major 2 cubicles and a senior and well developed ENP service which runs within the urgent treatment Centre . Our dedicated Paediatric Area provides a separate waiting area and playroom with 3 cubicles and a resus cubicle and triage rooms and we have paediatric wards on site.

The Emergency department has undergone modernisation and a change in leadership, both nursing and medical and we are working towards new and exciting projects to improve patient flow. Western Sussex Hospitals aims to empower and develop staff through utilising the Patient First methodology and we would love to hear from enthusiastic, motivated nurses, with excellent communication skills and a vision for the future. This is a fast paced and at times challenging environment and can be hard work, however, being able to deliver great care is something we pride ourselves on and strive to deliver as a team.

We have an established induction program designed to support and develop all nurses to become confident and effective Emergency Nurses with the opportunity to grow and flourish.
