This is a 3-year apprenticeship training programme to become a Public Health Practitioner gaining a BSc in Public Health (Hons) and eligibility to apply to and join the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR)You will be supported by the University of the West of England for a proportion of the week and the rest of your time will be spent on a variety of programme areas in the local authority communities and public health division undertaking different public health tasks and projects. During your apprenticeship you will be fully supported in the workplace and given every opportunity to succeed, you will have workplace mentors that will support you throughout this exciting journey.

As a Public Health Apprentice, you will work in partnership with colleagues in Communities and Public Health, the Council and other organisations to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities in Bristol. You will also support the planning, delivery and evaluation of public health initiatives.

You will work in specified areas of public health and across portfolio areas in line with the learning on the degree programme and the business need.

You will work across the three domains of public health as and when required:
  • Health Improvement
  • Health Protection
  • Healthcare Public Health

Desired skills

  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and external partners and evidence of this
  • Experience of partnership working and collaborating
  • Ability to communicate ideas and information to a range of people, including the ability to write reports and provide complex information
  • Ability to research, gather, analyse and present information in reports
  • Good organisation and project management skills
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and external partners
  • Ability to work on own initiative and adopt an accurate, analytical and methodical approach to work
  • Knowledge and confidence with Microsoft office or equivalent. Including Word and Excel


Personal qualities

We are looking for someone that is willing to learn, is a good team worker, is non-judgemental, has patience, is reliable and trustworthy and interested in public health and wants to develop their knowledge to the benefit of the team and the Citizens of Bristol.

Desired qualifications

Minimum Grade C/4 or above in maths and English (or equivalent) and you must have 112 UCAS points, this can be checked on the UCAS calculator UCAS Tariff Points - Calculate Your Entry Requirements and this is a UWE entry requirement.

For anyone that is undertaking their A Levels currently, please review in accordance with your predictive grades, please keep in mind this is a requirement and anything under 112 UCAS points would not accept you onto the programme.

Future prospects

There are progression options available and possible permanent vacancies, this would depend on the individual and the vacancies present. Progression will be discussed with the learner, as we are always looking to continually develop our employees.

Things to consider

There will be mandatory training within the role that is generic, this includes Data Protection, Equality and Diversity, Safeguarding, etc. In addition, the apprentice will have opportunities to undertake specialised training that employees within our public health team will access.
