The Apprentice will provide directsupport for practical calibration work and assist the analysts in the various analytical teams in the troubleshooting of equipment faults and communicating with the Analytical Support team and service providers for external engineer support.

The Apprentice will be responsible for hosting the external engineers on site and for the review of the documentation and summary reports.

The Apprentice will learn about, and participate in, the requirements for Data Integrity and cGMP and understand the critical importance of these in a pharmaceutical laboratory.

TheApprentice will participate in improvement project work and develop an understanding of analytical equipment breakdowns failure modes and the techniques to identify faults and rectify.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Complete any college-based courses and be prepared to undertake any future training, internally or externally, as required by Catalent
  • To comply with all Catalent EH&S requirements
  • To ensure that all tasks are conducted in accordance with defined risk assessments and that tasks are carried out with regards to the safety of others
  • To understand the cGMP requirements as related to the role, to follow the training provided and ensure that all activities are performed according to the appropriate procedures

Assist Analytical Support team with day to day activities to include:
  • Assist with managing the equipment calibration schedule for the Quality Control and Analytical Development laboratories
  • Scheduling the site visits with the service providers via the telephone, online forms and email
  • Help to ensure all documentation is in place for GMP and safety prior to any site visits
  • Assist with hosting the visitors (contractors) when they attend site to perform work on the laboratory equipment
  • Perform reviews of the completed documentation and provide feedback on any document errors to more senior staff
  • Perform practical calibration activities according to defined procedures for equipment including pH meters, analytical balances, dissolution baths and perform temperature data mapping for controlled storage chambers (incubators, refrigerators and freezers)
  • Assist in performing the weekly Analytical Support equipment checks within the laboratories
  • Ensure that document archiving is up to date
  • Assist in the management of the laboratory Reference Standards
  • To prepare laboratory chemicals and reagents as required for Analytical Support work, documenting and labelling them according to laboratory procedures
  • Gain a proficient understanding for the use of some of the simpler items of analytical equipment used within the laboratory, including analytical balances, pH meters, dissolution baths, disintegration bath
  • Help to troubleshoot these instruments when they do not work as expected
  • Provide timely feedback to more senior staff and to the laboratory analysts
  • Gain an understanding for the operation and use of more complex analytical equipment and the associated computer application, including HPLC, UV/Vis Spectrophotometry and FTIR
  • Basic knowledge of the main site Quality Systems including Trackwise, Qumas & Empower 3
  • To participate proactively in any improvement projects

This list is not exhaustive and in addition to these duties and responsibilities the Apprentice Technician is required to carry out any other reasonable duties that may be required from time to time.

Desired qualifications

A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and maths at grade C/5 or above. And A levels (or equivalent) in a related science subject.

Future prospects

If apprentice does well, then there is a possibility of this role becoming permanent
