Future prospects
After your Software Engineering apprenticeship, you can progress into a junior developer role (this includes web and app development). You'll have the skills to continue growing within a tech team, and have enough knowledge/experience to pick up new languages with ease. Software Engineering Level 4 will also provide a good foundation for transitioning into data science.
Things to consider
Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week). The Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage guide is updated every April (ANMW): https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates
- Use industry standard tools to support development work - Defect Management (Jira), Source Control
- Incident Management (Remedy Force), Continuous Integration (Jenkins) and other tools (e.g. SITS, Java, Oracle etc.)
- To complete the work requested of your line manager, agreed with apprentice line manager at the beginning of each placement
- Develop software using specialist programming techniques learned and technical expertise (with guidance)
- Actively test developed software to find possible faults and make decisions on the most appropriate and effective technical approach for resolving a particular problem
- Carry out unit testing on developed software or system
- Perform fault fixes and at times make decisions on the best approach to resolving problems
- Work as part of a team designing, building, testing and deploying a range of software across a number of different technologies within UCL. Software to include web sites, research and administrative applications, and learning and teaching applications

Desired qualifications
- Five GCSE grades C - A* (4-9) or equivalent, including English and maths
- Level 3 qualification (A level, BTEC or equivalent)
- Three months' prior coding experience
