Our Organisation

NHS England and NHS Improvement came together on 1 April 2019 as a new single organisation. The NHS Long Term Plan focuses on delivering integrated care to patients at the local level and we can best support the NHS to deliver this as a single integrated organisation.

At the NHS, we are reminded every day of how important life is. As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement whether that's job share, part time or another flexible pattern. In addition, although the role advertised may have an 'home' office base indicated, we remain committed to supporting flexibility around workplace locations. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

Our new operating model represents a strong shift to regional delivery supported by expert corporate teams. Local health systems are supported by our integrated regional teams who play a major leadership role in the geographies they manage.

We are jointly committed to creating and maintaining a fair and supportive working environment and culture, where contributions are fully recognised and valued by all and staff feel empowered to carry out their duties to the best of their abilities. As employers we are committed to promoting and protecting the physical and mental health and well-being of all our staff. This underpins our values as set out in the NHS Constitution, supports us to be an Employer of Choice and ultimately enables our employees to support the effective care of our patients.

Leading sustainable change

There's never been a more exciting time to join the NHS as we embark on our commitment to become the world's first net zero carbon (NZC) national health system by 2040, setting global standards for healthcare providers.

The NHS Long Term Plan outlines the need for change to tackle the climate "health emergency" to help prevent illness, reduce pressure on A&Es, and save tens of thousands of lives. We need people with a passion for sustainability and tackling climate change to make our ambitious plans a reality.

We have already made great strides in improving our carbon footprint and reducing the environmental impact of our service. Between 2019 and 2021 we invested £50m in an LED lighting replacement programme and by 2022 we will have invested a further £260m in NZC initiatives across our estate. As the largest employer in England, responsible for around 4% of the nation's carbon emissions and with 1.4 million staff working across 1,140 hospitals and 7,500 primary care buildings, we have a major part to play in meeting national climate change goals.

We are therefore expanding our sustainability and net zero carbon team to drive forward our commitment. This is a once in a lifetime career opportunity to help lead and shape the course of action we take in tackling climate change across the largest public estate in the country.

About the role

Providing technical leadership on energy efficiency and carbon reduction interventions to ensure we reach our NZC targets, you will lead the establishment of seven new regional NZC energy and engineering hubs.

Your role will be pivotal in ensuring we deliver critical projects and programmes aimed to accelerate work to decarbonise heating systems and driving forward business cases which create wide-scale change.

You will play a crucial role in linking solutions and innovations with technical standards and evolving technical standards to respond to the NZC challenge.

Connecting across government and the NHS, you will ensure Estates and Facilities teams are kept up to date with the latest technical advancements and advice on NZC.

Leading and mentoring the next generation of NZC engineers/energy managers, you will oversee the mentorship and development of our seven new apprentices.

Working with the regional and national Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response (EPRR) teams to develop our estates response to climate change adaptation, you'll create tools and guidance for an active response.

About you

You'll be a supportive and collaborative team player who is ready to make a tangible impact by delivering our ambitious plans at pace across the NHS. Your personal passion and commitment to delivering sustainability and climate change will be matched by your experience in technical engineering.

Your advanced knowledge of technical builds at a national scale within a large estate will ideally include decarbonisation or sustainability.

A strategic thinker with excellent interpersonal skills, you'll have experience of working across multi-functional teams and with third party organisations, influencing and negotiating outcomes that align to our objectives.

We work across all aspects of estates & facilities functions from national policies and workforce strategy to regional and local delivery through local healthcare systems.
