Batten & Allen Toolmaking teams are vitally important in supporting all Press Shop and related plant activities. They are responsible for the regular maintenance, repairs and modifications of all existing press tools. The required skills to build new press tools will also be taught as part of the apprenticeship. You will also learn state-of-the-art engineering and production techniques, so you need to understand the assembly and function of technical equipment.

You will be trained in traditional skills to include:
  • Hand fitting
  • Milling
  • Turning
  • Grinding
  • Drilling and welding

You will also receive training in CNC (computerised numerical control) machines and ensuring facility run-time is maximised using TPM and other known tools. You should also have good communication skills, the ability to think logically and to work independently or as part of a team.

Desired qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE's (or equivalent) at grade 5/C (or above) including Maths and English
  • Ideally a technology-related subject or a BTEC level 2 or equivalent in a relevant Engineering or Technology discipline would be advantageous but is not essential
