Apprentice HealthCare Science (HCS) Assistant (Respiratory)

14 month fixed term apprenticeship - 37.5 hours/week

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and conscientious individual to start a career in Healthcare Science. The post is a fixed term level 2 apprenticeship and will be based in the Respiratory Physiology Department within Medical Physics at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust and the community diagnostic centre at Breathing Space.

The successful apprentice will be required to undertake the necessary training and academic development needed to perform first-line respiratory function tests (spirometry), electrocardiograms (ECG's) and blood sampling on patients. The apprentice will also have the opportunity to assist other staff with intermediate and advanced procedures. General tasks such as cleaning medical devices, stock control, administration and clerical duties will also be required. Training will include undertaking the BTEC level 2 diploma in Healthcare Science provided by Sheffield College, in addition to on the job training in the clinical environment. Most of the time you will be learning in the work place but will also be required to attend the block release college sessions (currently delivered remotely) and complete some distance learning.

You should have 5 GCSEs to include English, Mathematics and Science Grade 4 or above (or equivalent) as an essential minimum requirement.

In order to fulfil the role, you will need to be available to commence studies in September 2021. Restrictions can apply for anyone who currently holds a level 2 or 3 qualification in the same area as the framework on offer within the apprenticeship vacancy. The successful applicant may be required on occasions to work independently and as the post will be based in a clinical area, applications will only be accepted from candidates aged 18 or over at date of appointment. As the post will be based across two sites the successful candidate will also be expected to travel to both sites.

On satisfactory achievement & completion of the Apprenticeship Scheme, the qualifications, experience and skills gained will provide an opportunity to apply for band 2 positions with a starting salary of £18005 pro rata. Further career progression within the chosen field may be possible.

The cost of undertaking a DBS disclosure will be met by the individual. The current price of a standard check is £23 and an enhanced check is £40.
