  • To carry out tasks as arranged by the Team Leader, with further guidance by a supporting member of the Civils and Structures team
  • To become proficient in a wide range of site supervision activities associated with highways and paving, marine and building works on the Port estate
  • To carry out formal and informal inspections of on-going works, ensuring that all work is undertaken in an efficient manner and complies with the appropriate standards of safety and quality
  • To maintain detailed site diaries recording progress of work, including plant, materials and labour
  • To assist in the preparation and review of risk assessments and method statements.
  • To assist the with new build and maintenance contracts, becoming familiar with the use of technical drawings and specifications
  • To assist with general surveys and inspections of existing assets, and following these up by preparing work orders where repairs are necessary
  • To provide assistance to other team members as required
  • To become familiar with the sections of the Board's policies and procedures applicable to civils and paving, marine and building works
  • To attend college on a day-release basis, and progress yearly in order to obtain the qualifications stated
  • Undertake training and additional courses that may be required to keep abreast of regulations, changes in legislation and technology

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Level 3 qualified, such as an NVQ, A Level or T Level, in STEM, construction or civil engineering related discipline.
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • A high degree of self-motivation, enthusiasm and positive attitude
  • Ability to work well within a team
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, use of MS Word and Outlook

Personal qualities

  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Good user skills in Microsoft Word, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with work environment e.g. through work experience (desirable)
  • Valid driving license (desirable) but not essential

Desired qualifications

  • GCSE grade A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent) including maths and English
