Post:(Band 6 equivalent) Specialist Occupational Therapist

Base:Cygnet Hospital Bury - Adult PICU

Responsible for:
  • Managing a caseload of up to 12 service users with a range of mental health presentations in acute crisis, displaying challenging behaviours, and detained under the Mental Health Act in a PICU setting
  • Managing an OT Assistant and Activity coordinators
  • Supporting graduate OTs

Responsible to:Highly Specialist OT (Band 7 equivalent)

Hours:40 hours per week. Mon to Fri

Overview of Southampton PICU ward:

Cygnet Hospital Bury is the largest hospital in the Cygnet group across the UK. We have 14 wards across 3 buildings. One building is a CAMHS service the other two offer a range of Medium Secure, Low Secure and PICU environments.

We have a newly arisen vacancy for an experienced OT to work on our recently opened PICU ward for men. The patient group are all experiencing an acute episode with psychotic symptoms and are in need of enhanced care and treatment to manage this episode. The OT role in this setting is to provide low level diversional activities while assessing the complexity of OT functional needs. The ideal candidate will be able to adapt to assessing and meeting need when individuals first arrive on the service in acute distress, and then adapt treatment pathways to assess Occupational function in preparation for discharge. You will be an active member of the MDT assessing risk on a daily basis to devise risk management strategies. These will then inform your OT interventions and treatment goals on a daily basis.

Prioritisation skills are vital to manage the rapidly changing caseload of clients effectively. The aim of OT interventions in this service is to assess and treat service users in a compassionate manner and to plan for discharge in a robust and timely way.

Within this role there is scope for your involvement in service development and strategic working as you will also be involved in the Acute and PICU Cygnet Service line working group nationally. You will have access to forums such as NAPICU and QNPICU.

  • The Successful Candidate should be/have:
    • A registered Occupational Therapist with the HCPC (Health Care Professions Council)
    • Experience in the field of adult mental health and in environments that manage challenging behaviours
    • An understanding of Occupational Therapy process/interventions and can take a "hands on" approach quickly after taking on the role
    • Excellent communication and time management skills
    • An ability to manage highly demanding clinical presentations
    • A passion for student education
    • Some experience in managing junior staff

    Requirements:
