About the apprenticeship


Job Purpose: Greeting callers and legal audio typing secretarial work

1. Manning the reception desk
2. Receiving and directing telephone calls and visitors to the office in a professional, courteous manner
3. Dealing with straight forward enquiries
4. Updating the Case Management System and utilising this for document production.
5. Audio typing or copy typing of letters and other documents
6. Making telephone calls to clients, solicitors, court etc
7. Diary maintenance
8. Collection/delivery/despatch of post
9. Opening and closing of files following set procedures
10. Keeping the reception area clean and tidy
11. Any other tasks that may be required.

Gamlins are seeking a hardworking, committed, mature individual with a strong work ethic. Committed to career development and a desire to progress. An ability to take instructions and apply them practically and to keep a cool head under pressure. Confidentiality is an essential requirement due to the nature of our business. Accuracy and attention to detail are also essential for this role. Good communication skills as will be speaking directly to clients and other professional bodies in addition to colleagues and Partners.



RSA Stage 2 in Typing skills or equivalent and/or
Computer literacy (ECDL) or equivalent
Communication - good telephone manner
Maintaining confidentiality at all times
Previous administration experience and/or training
Personable manner - an ability to deal with stressful situations
Basic knowledge of legal procedures
Experience of using digital dictation
Previous experience of working within a Case Management system.
Six months work experience preferably in a legal practice
Experience of dealing with confidential and complex matters


GCSE Maths and English grade C or above


Welsh Spoken Skills: No Welsh Written Skills: No

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
