JOB TITLE: SCRUB PRACTIONER / THEATRES

LOCATION: Main Theatres / Day Surgery Unit / Treatment Centre Theatres / Admissions Unit

GRADE: Band 5

BASE: ListerHospital, Stevenage, however, you may be required to work on a permanent or temporary basis elsewhere within the East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.

RESPONSIBLE TO Band 7 Speciality Team Leader

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Theatre Manager

JOB SUMMARY: To care for patients undergoing clinical / peri-operative procedures by participating effectively within the multi-disciplinary theatre team.

To care for patients within the Admissions Unit by participating effectively within the multi-disciplinary team.

MAIN TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

CLINICAL: The post holder is required to perform competently in the following areas:

  • Maintain health, safety and the control of infection in clinical work areas.


  • Plan, implement and evaluate the peri-operative care of patients as part of a multi disciplinary team.


  • Receive, transfer and position patients for clinical procedures.


  • Store, prepare and administer prescribed drugs to patients in accordance with Trust Policy and monitor the effects of drugs on patients.


  • Prepare, monitor and maintain materials and equipment for clinical procedures.


  • Support, monitor and care for patients during clinical procedures.


  • Monitor, assess and care for patients in the immediate post-operative period.


  • Contribute to treating patients during clinical emergencies.


  • Contribute to the care of patients in areas outside of the theatre environment such as Obstetrics, Accident and Emergency, X-Ray and any other such place that your skill is required.


  • Carry out admission procedure & nurse led discharge in day surgery / PACU2 and Admission Unit.


  • Participation in on-calls and out of hours working is needed by all theatre staff, regardless of the department they are based in, to provide adequate emergency access to our most acutely ill patients.


  • To work in any of the theatre areas and admission unit according to service needs, regardless of which theatre department they are based in, although it is anticipated that staff do predominately work in the department they are employed to be based in.

    EDUCATIONAL: The post holder is required to give educational support in the following:

    • Participate in the training of NVQ L2 and L3 (Apprenticeships) candidate


    • Participate in the training of DipHe ODP L3 students
    • Participate in the training of pre and post registered nursing students.


    • Participate in the training and supervision of qualified or unqualified staff.
    • Act as a mentor for learners.
    • Maintain own competence in the assessment methods required for the above groups
    • Organise and participate in formal and informal teaching sessions.
    • Monitor and record progress of learners in association with mentors and team leaders.
  • Participate in the induction of newly appointed / qualified staff
