Therole will best suit somebody who wants to be challenged and learn from an expert team that is highly regarded across the industry. The apprentice will be aa self-starter with strong communication skills who loves the media, has a keen interest in financial services, understands cultural trends, and can demonstrate a creative flair. Attention to detail, integrity, authenticity, punctuality, reliability, flexibility and personal responsibility are also important traits.

Rather than being a small cog in a big wheel, the benefit of joining a small company is that you'll be involved in just about every aspect of the business from day one, including our weekly and monthly team meetings.

In addition, the role will also include spending some time with the firm's sister business, Protection Review, which will provide in-depth access to how an events company is run, including attending events. It's an exciting time to join. We are growing, well established with over a decade of growth, home-based, and have just won a Public Trust Award from the CII.

PR activities:

The PR Apprentice will be required to undertake (but not be restricted to) the following activities as part of their role.
  • Ideas and strategy: Attend meetings and contribute ideas and suggestions wherever appropriate
  • Writing: Writing for business communications, communicating effectively with clients, writing for the media (including articles, news releases, blogs, and case studies)
  • Social media: Understanding when and which social media channel is appropriate and how it can be incorporated into a PR campaign. Using social media in a strategic and effective way for companies and brands
  • Media liaison: Understanding how the media operates, dealing with day to day inquiries from the media, pitching stories and/or products to the media, building relationships with the media (i.e. journalists), creating media lists, monitoring press clippings, sending/receiving press selection products
  • Deliver PR campaigns: Supporting the team in creating new campaigns, working to deliver a strategy for a client or organisation
  • Evaluate PR campaigns: Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of PR campaigns and measuring their impact, including reporting for clients
  • Writing award entries: Writing or reviewing award entries for clients to help ensure they are as good as they can be
  • Promotion of Carr Consulting: Promotion of Carr Consulting and it's owners, specifically in the PR industry and PR publications and events
  • Research & data analysis: Conducting research for the team and/or clients and reporting key details
  • Presentation: Planning, structuring and delivering presentations internally & externally
  • Events: Planning, organising and co-coordinating events, meeting the objectives of the brief

Workload management:
  • Time management: Planning, organising and prioritising your workload to ensure deadlines and objectives for both work activities and apprenticeship training are met. Ensuring email/online diaries are kept up to date
  • Meetings: Arranging internal and external meetings, ensuring rooms are suitable and attendees needs are catered for
  • Career development: Taking responsibility for personal learning and professional development

Working with people:
  • Professional relationships: Developing professional relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, effective listening and verbal/written communication. Ensuring supervisors and coaches are aware of work-in-progress and are briefed when any problems arise. Working with teams to achieve goals and promote a motivated work environment.
  • Networking: Building a professional network of other PR professionals whilst maintaining a positive company and personal image

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective communicator at all levels
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office packages and experienced in social media (including LinkedIn and Twitter)
  • Organised and good time management: you can juggle different activities, understanding what needs to be prioritised, and will flag if deadlines won't be met
  • Attention to detail: you consistently ensure that you review your pieces of work and submit to a good standard even when things are busy

Personal qualities

  • Genuine interest in public relations, communications or marketing, in particular including financial services (insurance, savings, investments etc)
  • Ambitious, motivated and committed
  • Flexible and willing to learn
  • A proactive 'self-starter': someone who takes the initiative to volunteer for tasks, is energetic in making the most of the opportunity, and offers ideas at meetings
  • Creative
  • A strong interest in the media, how news is created and reported, and the impact it can have on consumers

Desired qualifications

  • GCSE Grades 9-4 (A*- C) or equivalent in English Language and maths
  • A-level and/or other further education preferable

Future prospects

The apprenticeship will provide a solid base for a wide range of careers across the financial services sector not limited to PR. The potential career path of a successful applicant will form part of discussions during theapprenticeship - future employment opportunities within Carr Consulting is preferable.
