The role of the Barrister’s Clerk is in short to be the Personal Assistant to the Barristers within Chambers. Clerks are responsible for the smooth running of the Barrister’s Diaries and Chambers Administration as well as maintaining Chambers Client Base and Computerised Diary System.   A Clerk’s role is one of the most important roles within Chambers.  The Clerk’s will be required to  have a knowledge of the type of law the Barristers within Chambers deal with in order to provide advice to professional clients (Solicitors), as required, in relation to the Barristers expertise and to be able to allocate work accordingly.    It is vital that all tasks carried out by the Clerk are carried out accurately and efficiently as mistakes would have an impact on the court listings for that day.  The Clerk will also need to be able to look at the diary and establish what representations need to be made in relation to listings and requirements for time markings etc.

Key Tasks:

  • Assist in the day to day running of Counsel’s diary – with the view to ultimately running the daily diary.
  • Liaising with Instructing Solicitors/Other Chambers/Court Centres, with regards to listing of cases and making representations regarding cases/hearings. 
  • Booking conferences.   
  • Maintaining the diary.
  • Cross referencing the diary system Lex with the Crown Court Digital Case System, Emails etc.
  • Attending daily court users meeting and training when required.
  • Booking on new briefs and future dates. (It is vital this is done accurately as it will impact the running of the diary management system)
  • Dealing with enquiries from Instructing Solicitors (Professional Clients) and Lay Clients.
  • Filing of case papers.  Maintaining Counsel’s pigeon holes and brief shelves.
  • Confirming Counsel’s diary at the end of each day and ensuring case papers are ready when required and invites on complete on the digital case system.   
  • Advising Solicitors of outcome of cases.
  • Taking telephone calls. 
  • Completing Manual/Back Up Diary.
  • Undertaking any general administration tasks which are required within day to day running of chambers including photocopying, filing, scanning etc.
  • Checking of emails and sending of emails as required. 
  • Composing emails and letters as and when required.
  • Taking of DX Mail and Collecting of DX Mail from the DX Change when required – (One Tram Stop/Walking distance of Chambers)
  • Greeting clients and providing refreshments when asked to do so.
  • Liaising with and reporting to the Senior Clerk.  
  • Generally assisting the Senior Clerk and Members of Chambers with various tasks as required.
  • Any other tasks which may be reasonably requested during the day to day running of chambers.
  • You may also be asked to attend Courses which are appropriate to your role in Chambers, which may not be local and may not be during working hours.  Any expenses for the Course and Travel to and From the Course and Refreshments where appropriate will be remunerated by Chambers and at the discretion of the Senior Clerk.
  • Any general issues or concerns will be raised in the first instance with the Senior Clerk or if that is not appropriate then to a Member of Chambers and thereafter with the Head of Chambers.
