The scientific apprenticeship programme allows apprentices to learn and develop in a team with a renewed focus on building the AstraZeneca medicines pipeline, with 7 new oncology medicines being added to our pipeline. Our Oncology team is driven by speed, you will be backed by leadership and empowered at every level to prioritise and make bold moves. Allowing you to make the best of our structured education and work-based environment while you study towards a degree via distance learning with the University of Kent.
What the role involves
We are offering an apprenticeship within our Oncology Translational Medicine (Genomics and Pathology) research teams. This position will give a rounded set of skills and experiences in the selected research areas. They will also provide the opportunity to gain a unique insight into AstraZeneca’s world-leading scientific research, enabling the development of a new generation of cancer treatments.
Training and development
Our apprentices receive an Apprenticeship Training Plan that describes the training needed. It will include a mixture of external and internal training that will ensure each apprentice is fully competent by the end of the programme. Each apprentice will gain transferable core skills and knowledge. In addition, they will gain specific skills tailored to the individual requirements of their roles. The combination of workplace training and educational study will ensure that you develop the skills and qualifications to provide excellent prospects for your future scientific career.
Our apprentices initially work towards a Level 5 qualification with one day per week set aside for study. Typically, this will be a Foundation Degree in Applied Bioscience. https://www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/technician-scientist/
There is also a future option to extend your apprenticeship within AstraZeneca to study for a further 2 years and gain a Level 6 BSc (honours) degree qualification.
Additionally, the apprenticeship is recognised by the relevant professional bodies at Registered Scientist (RSci) level.
Essential skills/capabilities required:
- Good communication skills
- Good team working skills
- High organisation skills and confidence to work independently
- Logical thinking to be able to apply processes
- The ability to apply a rational approach to problem solving, making judgements based on sound reasoning, approaching problems in a logical manner
- Concerns for standards
- High numeracy and literacy skills
- Computer literacy
- Five GCSEs (or equivalent) grades or 9-4 including Maths, English, and Science.
- To have achieved or predicted to achieve a minimum of 2 A Levels (or equivalent) including grade B or above in Biology (96 UCAS points)
