The technology team are always hungry for talented developers to join with us on our tech journey and are now looking for bright, motivated apprentices who want to produce high quality code and work with the latest cloud and development technologies. Our newest Apprentice Software Developer will need to be team players who aren't afraid to get stuck in with writing code and fixing problems. They'll work closely with other, experienced developers and develop their skills and experience in commercial software development.

We are looking for those who will throw themselves into our business-critical work, absorbing the wealth of technical experience around you to grow your tech skills. We are looking for a truly ambitious apprentices who will share in our passion for all things tech, who would jump at the chance to work collaboratively with our award-winning team of Developers, Testers, DevOps Engineers, Product Owners - all with a genuine love for that they do.

As our newest Apprentice Software Developer, you will be responsible for the following areas of accountability:
  • Creating well crafted, resilient solutions which are used throughout the business and by the public
  • Taking corrective action for any issues with our existing systems
  • Playing an active role as part of a team in planning and implementing technology projects
  • Taking responsibility for the quality and efficacy of their code, from inception to completion, and ensuring that systems are monitored effectively to maximise business continuity
  • Working closely with team colleagues to improve their programming skills

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • An understanding of Object Oriented Programming
  • Awareness of common software design patterns
  • A basic competency in modern object-orientated programming language such as Java
  • Some exposure to web technologies e.g. JavaScript, PHP
  • Some exposure to version control systems e.g. Github

  • Awareness of PHP e.g. through completing a personal project in that language
  • Knowledge of modern PHP framework such as Laravel
  • Exposure to Docker or equivalent platform
  • Awareness or experience of cloud technologies such as EC2

Personal qualities

Attention to detail;
  • Well-ordered approach to solving technical problems
  • Desire to complete work thoroughly and to a high standard
  • Good communicator in person and especially within a team environment
  • Willingness to experiment with and evaluate new technologies and techniques

Desired qualifications

  • Candidates must have 5 GCSES, A*-C or the new grades 4-9, including Maths & English Language (or equivalent)
  • Candidates must have the right to work in the United Kingdom
  • Candidates must have been a resident in an EU country for the past 3 years
  • Candidates must be educated at the minimum of Level 3 (A-Levels, BTEC, NVQ Level 3)

Future prospects

The apprenticehip starts as a two year fixed term contract with the possibility of extending to a third year for a full BSc Degree. We hope that sucessful apprentices will become long term members of the team at Sykes.

Things to consider

The location for the role is Chester City centre with, with 20% of your time training with Ada, The National College for Digital Skills, through a blend of remote and face to face training at their campus in central Manchester.
