Join the new ward opening at Thornford Park hospital as an Occupational Therapy Assistant, It's a great time to join and help shape this new service as part of a new multidisciplinary team as you change lives for the better.

The new 14-bed ward will join the existing 129 beds that provide Forensic Mental health rehabilitation, PICU and ASD services, which are set in 21 acres of Berkshire countryside.

Working within the Occupational Therapy department, you will assist the Occupational Therapist in assessing, planning, implementing & evaluating the social and recreational needs of service users and develop a range of structured activities to support their individual care plans.

You will be heavily involved in developing social and recreational activities, this includes creating effective therapeutic relationships and daily living activities.

The role will have a significant social & recreational element, which will include some out of hours working.

Other responsibilities:

  • To work as part of the Occupational Therapy Department allocated to a specifically named ward
  • To maintain adequate records as required by existing procedures, entering appropriate details in the service user healthcare records as necessary
  • To assist Occupational Therapists, Primary Nurses and other MDT staff in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individual care plans
  • To work in conjunction with other OTAs to develop a hospital-wide out of hours structured activity programme
  • Help to identify early signs of relapse or crisis by monitoring the service user's progress, level of functioning and mental state and alert the appropriate staff involved in the individual's care
  • Report regularly to OT's, primary nurses and MDT


To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • To deal sensitively with distress, disturbance and unpredictability;
  • Demonstrate a good basic understanding of mental health conditions
  • Show a creative and imaginative approach to problem-solving
  • Have the practical skills to assist the daily living, which will see you assist with basic practical tasks
  • Promote safe working practice
