Band 7 Neurosciences

Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced Senior Occupational Therapist to join our dynamic Neurosciences Team at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The post consists of 18 month rotations across the following areas:
  • Subacute Management Team / Complex Management Team (Team Lead) - Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead
  • Critical Care, Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead.
  • Acute stroke and acute neurology unit (Team Lead) - Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead.
  • Level 2 inpatient neuro-rehabilitation unit - Royal Free Neurological Rehabilitation Centre, Edgeware Community Hospital.

The Subacute Management Team / Complex Management Team is a unique and well respected multidisciplinary assessment and rehabilitation team that provides intensive rehabilitation to a range of complex patients. In this team you will lead a team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and therapy assistants and be responsible triaging referrals and team development.

Our Critical Care OT team is well established and has been at the forefront of services during the COVID pandemic and you will be supported by a highly structured programme of learning and induction that was recently presented at the RCOT National Conference, as well as being involved in innovative approaches to managing delirium and interprofessional learning.

Our Acute Stroke Unit has a consistently excellent SSNAP rating and we pride ourselves on our evidenced based approach to assessment and treatment and comprehensive teaching programme.

The inpatient level 2 unit based at the Edgware site has well-appointed facilities with access to robotic upper limb equipment, kitchen and gardening facilities and is co-located with community services to facilitate smooth transition to the community.

On both sites you will be very well supported by experienced Clinical Lead Band 8 Occupational Therapists and we have peer support and education initiatives across sites.

The Therapies team at the Royal Free are truly inter-disciplinary with a strong emphasis on supportive supervision, an active learning environment and a focus on staff welfare and teamwork using the "What matters to you?" framework. We have a varied and comprehensive programme of therapy in-service training and our Therapies Education Team have recently expanded to further support access to ongoing education, courses and CPD. We are also well supported by our Therapies Research and Development Team and we currently are engaged in several formal external research projects, which you will have the opportunity to participate in. In 2021 we supported staff to present and attend the RCOT Conference as well as the UK Stroke Conference. The service also is actively engaged in many staff development programmes including supporting clinical academic careers, Advanced Clinical Practice and OT apprenticeships. We recently rolled out all new IT to support our transition to electronic notes and at the Hampstead site we are working on plans for a refurbished ADL kitchen and replenishing our specialist wheelchair stock. Our Discharge Team is skilled and supportive, meaning at the Royal Free our neuro therapists can focus on providing excellent therapy.

Applicants should have previous experience in the field of stroke and neurology and be able to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in neurological assessment and treatment planning, as well as having experience in supervision and leadership. Excellent communication skills, a solution-focussed approach and a commitment to continuing professional development are essential to this position.
